I don’t use conditioner any more … and yet, my hair is looking the best it ever has!
How can this be so? Especially when you learn that my hair has been highlighted?
It’s simple. I have fine, limp hair and about two months ago, ran out of conditioner.
Why I Don’t Use Conditioner Anymore
To my astonishment, my hair had never looked so good. It styled beautifully. It had volume.
If that’s what life is like without conditioner, I was a convert.
But … over time my hair, particularly the highlighted ends, grew drier. It was a tangled mess after washing, and was becoming harder and harder to comb into some semblance of order.
My hairdresser recommended a volumising spray which is all the conditioner fine hair like mine needs. Seriously!
Although KMS California make a shampoo for fine hair, they don’t make a matching conditioner at all. Instead, the matching partner to the fine hair shampoo is the very product that Tara used on my hair. That product is KMS Add Volume: body build detangler.
So now I go conditioner free, all the time.
My hair is tangle free, easy to comb, a pleasure to style, and has volume and bounce.
Thanks to the great cut and going without conditioner, now every day is a Good Hair Day!

I’m tempted. I’m really tempted….but I have limp and frizzy hair. Sounds impossible, but it isn’t. I’m convinced I’d be sporting a frizz ball by noon if I went without conditioner. With school holidays starting today (meaning no need to leave the house all day), I may just try going conditioner-free to see if it works for me too!
Janet says
I understand – because MY hair was going frizzy too after a few weeks without conditioner. That’s why I’m loving the KMS spray. No more frizz, you only need 2 – 3 squirts maximum, and it smells so fresh! (And they really haven’t paid me to say all this!!!!)

I hardly use conditioner because my hair is thick and long and it takes so long to try to rinse it all out. If I leave some in my hair looks like an oil pot so I may condition once every 4-5 months if/when I remember !!!
Glad you found the products that work for you – there are so many out there it can be very confusing !
Have the best weekend !

Yes I have that problem too – my scalp is very oily so don’t want anything to contribute to the problem!

Wow, wonderful tip Janet. My hair and my daughter’s can be fine and limp, so that’s a great idea – and one I’ve never had suggested to me.
Janet says
I’m loving it though I just found out about an Australian product from right here in Redlands: Angel Magic Moisture from Me and My http://www.facebook.com/memyhair 🙂

I know I just loved seeing that button on your post. Made me all kinds of happy. I know that I don’t use conditioner all that often either and think my hair looks just fine. Though I don’t pay it all that much attention I must admit. I know I hope you have a great weekend and thanks for joining in
Janet says
I thought I was pretty clever, finally worked out how to do it!!! 😉

Happy National Good Hair Day!
I like the idea of a spray in conditioner – sounds really easy to use and I suspect much better for your hair.
Janet says
I’ve lovin’ it!

Or…you do what I did and cut all your hair off. No need for conditioner when there’s nothing to condition, I’ve found. Ok, that may be a little drastic for some but it sure does work. And you should see the teeny, tiny bit of shampoo I use.

Hmmm, interesting indeed!
I have never used shampoo or conditioner on my sons hair yet (he is 15 months old), and it is silky, soft and lovely, which has certainly given me food for thought. A couple of years ago my hair got “sick” all of a sudden and took months to recover, it was as though I had poured 5 cups of olive oil over it, and nothing I did helped,. I spoke to a pharmacist who thought that I might have had a form of dermatitis of the scalp, not unlike cradle cap but without the scales. I used a special shampoo, which barely helped, and no conditioner at all for months until my hair finally recovered.
I think now that it was probably a product build up. Maybe time to go without again….

Sometimes I think our culture brainwashes us into thinking we need particular beauty and hygiene products – when we don’t!

what a timely post. I just ran out of conditioner this morning. Instead of paying $30 for my Stefan condition, I’ll give this a go. I have a spray-leave-in conditioner I use anyway, maybe that will give me more volume? I have terribly fine boring hair 🙁
Grace says
Great idea, Janet. Sometimes I think conditioner is over-rated. It makes my hair looks so flat some days. KMS make some great products, don’t they? You look fabulous!
Janet says
Thanks Grace, don’t think I’ll ever be a model in a shampoo commercial but I’m pretty happy with my hair lately 🙂 though it desperately needed a cut at PB Event – wish I’d fitted one in!

I’m very tempted to give this a try …most of the time, my hair looks like a bird’s nest, even today when it’s supposed to be National Good Hair Day! It’s so good when you finally find a product that really works for you, isn’t it? 🙂
Janet says
I was pleasantly surprised … so you just never know.

Might have to try this! My oldest has curly hair very prone to getting dry X
Janet says
Curly hair can be a nightmare hey? Miss 16 had curls when she was tiny. Not anymore though, which she is most disappointed about!
Ness says
I have fine hair too so I might give it try. Thanks for the tip! x

Even Bogans deserve to have good hair days! xxx
Emily @ Have A Laugh On Me says
I am SO going to try this!! My hair is the same, very fine and limp! I have been sucked in to buying the coloured conditioner, but maybe I can save lots of money!!! Happy hair day lovely xx
Janet says
Try it – you’ll love it!

I soooo need to find a decent hairdresser, mine up and moved overseas 🙁 Yours looks amazing!

Dontcha just hate that?! And thanks!

I didn’t know it was Good Hair Day, and I even had a good hair day today! I got up before the kids and got it straightened, even had a nice comment! My home ec teacher in high school told us girls not to use too much conditioner because it dulls the natural shine of our hair. Of course, being a teenager I didn’t listen 🙂
Janet says
LOL Alicia about the teacher … apparently that’s how ghd got it’s name, it stands for Good Hair Day!
Lisa@RandomActsOfZen says
Isn’t it great when you find what works for you? I’ve had mine cut really short since the last time I saw you and I love it!
And BTW, totally shampoo girl in that photo 😉
Janet says
Naww shucks thanks Lisa. You will have to get a new pic on your blog so I can see your haircut!
Tegan says
A few years ago, by accident I washed my hair ‘backwards’ and used conditioner first and then shampoo. I found that my hair was a lot softer and not so oily. I have really thick hair and doing it backwards seems to help get the conditioner build up out easier.
Janet says
Haha that sounds like something I would do 😉
Rita says
I can’t imagine stop using conditioner! My hair are so thick and full of knots. But your hair look great Janet!
Vanessa says
Interesting. I have knotty hair so I use a leave in conditioner/detangler which I can’t live without…but also use regular condition in the shower as I think both make it easier to brush. But I do have to wash my hair pretty often for the greasyness.
