A Cat Called Egg

Janet Camilleri · 18/05/2020 · 6 Comments

A couple of years ago I introduced you to my two grandkitties, Annabelle (the white floof) and Delilah (or Lilah – the black floof).

2 grandkitties

However not long afterwards Miss 23 and her man adopted a kitten – around the time of her 21st birthday – which made them the proud parents of three fur babies! (And I thought *I* was a crazy cat lady!)

With Annabelle and Delilah having such elegant names, we were interested to see what they would name the new kitten. Many were tried – including Libby, and Peaches – but nothing seemed quite right.

when Egg was a kitten

Until they noticed their new kitten had a tendency to toot. Whenever she was picked up, she broke wind. When she was lying on the bed, she farted. When she was running around, she frumped and whiz-popped, dropped her guts and pooted …

Sometimes you could actually hear it; other times you just smelled it (and it was quite rotten!).

Forget eggs in a carton – here’s an Egg in a box!

And so she was called Egg … and it stuck.

People are often startled and amused when they hear my daughter has a cat called Egg. While it is a bit of an unusual name, it does seem to suit her and now we can’t imagine her as anything else!

(Although … she did whisper to me once that her full name is actually Elizabeth. So I call her Miss Elizabeth Egg.)

Egg is quite a shy kitty. Unlike her sister Annabelle, who is extremely sociable and will greet you at the door demanding pats and wuv, or Lilah, who can be a little lazy but will usually come and see what all the fuss is about. Instead, Egg disappears whenever visitors come over. Her favourite hidey holes include under the quilt covers, and at the back of the shelf at the top of the wardrobe.

But I’m told that she is even more affectionate than the other two when it comes to her mama.

And what do Egg’s sisters think?

Lilah is convinced that Egg must be one of her kittens, and is often to be seen giving her a bath – even though Egg is probably bigger than her these days! It’s a bit hard to tell because Lilah is so fluffy.

And both of them let Egg know if she gets a bit too boisterous or demanding, with a quick cuff around the ears.

3 floofs

But mostly? They get along beautifully.

What’s the weirdest cat name you’ve ever come across?!

My BFF’s sister had a cat named Spaz when we were teens. He was a spastic cat for sure! And once, he leapt onto the kitchen table, grabbed a slice of melon, and drug it off the table like a fresh kill. Oh, and their dog’s name was Nibbles – I just love that!

Spaz is so funny and would suit a lot of cats I’ve known … but not exactly politically correct these days 😉

They’re adorable! We have two cats…Ginger (completely unoriginal name!) and Scratchy, who my son named because as a stray, he started scratching on the window to come in. (and by the way, that was 4 years ago and he never did leave 🙂 )

Miss Fleur could very easily have been called Ginger, except she was already named when we got her … Scratchy is super cute, he certainly knew which window to scratch on!
