A Decorating Dilemma or Two

Janet Camilleri · 14/06/2020 · 6 Comments

If you’ve been hanging around these parts for a while, you will know I have been longing to refresh our bedroom decor for a looooong time now.

Before …

We’ve made minor changes, usually by updating the bed linen (not as easy as it sounds as we prefer a comforter to a quilt or bedspread, which means our choices are much more limited).

However I’ve been keen to replace our heavy dark timber furniture with something white or light. It was never a huge priority though, there always seemed to be other things that were more urgent, and it also felt a bit wasteful as technically there is nothing wrong (a couple of handles had broken off, but that’s all) with our original bedroom set which we bought as newlyweds 30 years ago.

But times and tastes change …

We knew we wanted to do “something” with our bedroom – but what?

Since we’ve moved into this house 18 months ago, we’ve updated the basics – carpet, curtains, walls etc – in neutrals. Late last year we were wandering through Ikea and were quite taken with the Hemnes dresser and bedside tables but didn’t take it any further than that.

I blame the boredom of Covid-19 lockdown! I was playing around on my computer one weekend and put together a “look book” of bedroom decor that I liked – colours, styles, furniture, decor items. It was a great idea because then I was able to show it the husbear, and he agreed it was time to “make it so” (in the words of our favourite starship captain, Jean-Luc Picard!).

Over the next two weeks it was like Christmas with all sorts of parcels and packages turning up at our door, waiting to be unwrapped and enjoyed!

Here’s how it’s looking now – we still need to get a decent mirror above the dresser, and I have a couple of small decorator dilemmas – but on the whole I’m quite pleased with it, and was able to re-use some items like the lamps, vases etc.

Decorating Dilemma #1

Perhaps you can help me with the finishing touches?

I’m not quite sure about the pillows and cushions. I love the look of beautiful beds piled high with an assortment of plain and print cushions, and a throw rug – but when I try to do it, it looks like something the cat dragged in (apologies to Miss Fleur). Suggestions are welcome!

Miss 23 thinks a couple of big European pillows might do the trick but I’m not sure.

Decorating Dilemma #2

The other decorating dilemma: What to put above the bed? Because the air conditioning unit sits off centre, it throws everything out. Or am I being too fussy?

It takes such a long time to get everything “just so”! Now that the bedroom is nearly complete, I’m currently checking out rugs for downstairs. Watch this space …

Looks much better and lighter. I think I would stack your normal pillows on top of each other, then two matching cushions …one either side in front and then one rectangular one across the front. ?

Looks lovely but in relation to the pillows there isn’t enough height. Your bedhead is quite high so the European pillows your daughter suggested would give the height that is missing and the other pillows would be in front. Colours are very soft and perfect for the bedroom.

Thanks Roslyn, I’ll give it a try. I have a couple stashed somewhere, just gotta find covers to suit.

I didn’t even notice the AC unit until you mentioned it, just the big white space. I thing a large print of some sort would draw all the focus!

I was thinking maybe a row of fairy lights? I measured the space between the AC unit and top of bedhead and it’s actually not a very big space, so maybe a row of 3 or 4 pics across would do the trick.
