A Love Story for Valentine’s Day

Twenty-five years ago, I was the new girl – the junior – in a busy government office in the City (Brisbane).

One of my daily tasks was to visit each section, and record the names of any staff who were off sick or on leave.

For the first few weeks, I wrote his name every day, as he was away on holidays. There was a pennant above his desk that he’d won in a recent marathon race, so I imagined him to be a real macho man.

I was sure he’d be a good looking Italian guy, complete with hairy chest, gold chains, smooth talker – you know the type – a real ladies’ man!

What I was expecting was something more like this …

… or this!

When we were finally introduced however, I found I’d gotten a few things wrong. Yes, good looking (and with a hairy chest – sorry, is that too much information?!) – but his surname is actually Maltese, not Italian. And as I went on to become his very first girlfriend, he definitely wasn’t a ladies’ man either!

It may not have been love at first sight, but I *did* think he was cute. I was quite taken with his sweet, shy smile.

Funnily enough, he says that MY smile was the thing that attracted him most at our first meeting, when a certain “cute little blonde” bounced into his office – and into his heart!

A few months later we began working in the same section and our friendship grew. Our first date was an ice cream after work one Friday afternoon, and the rest, as they say, is history!

At a wedding together in 1989

In May, we will have been married 23 years. He is my best friend, my soul mate, my confidante, my honey bear, a real hottie and the love of my life – and it just gets better and better over time!

Still in love, a quarter of a century later!

How did you and your man meet? Was it an office romance like ours?!
