Nearly two years ago now, I shared with you the “essentials” in the makeup kit of a middle aged woman (ie, me!).
I thought it would be interesting to take a look now, and see which products are still in my “essentials” kit, and if any new ones have joined them …

The Middle Aged Woman’s Makeup Kit
- My Garnier BB Cream remains a firm favourite! With it’s moisturising, sun protection and skin perfecting qualities, it makes a great foundation for my middle aged skin.
- Napoleon Perdis cream blusher – this came as a freebie with a magazine and I love the way it gives my cheeks a touch of subtle, dewy colour.
- New makeup brush – courtesy of Miss 18 – because it was about time I replaced the old one!
- L’Oreal Infallible pressed powder – this gives the perfect finish and helps my makeup last longer. It was part of the goodie bag I received at the L’Oreal Workshop at Problogger last year. It also helps tone down some of the reddish tinge I seem to get in my face these days.
- Ulta3 matte lipstick in Rose Bloom – I found this after my (former) favourite lipstick was discontinued. It has great coverage, isn’t drying on my lips (like many matte lipsticks are), and lasts well. The other thing I love is that it retails for under $5!
- You’ll still find a concealer in my makeup kit – this one is by DB.
- Mascara is also another must have – this one is by Face of Australia.
- At the front, are a couple of new additions to my makeup kit. The first one is a lip pencil – by Ulta 3, just like my favourite lipstick – because it helps to define my lips and stops lipstick bleeding. Oh the joys of getting older!
- And I’ve also welcomed a brow pencil to my kit. Brows have become a feature to be emphasised, and I’ve embraced the trend with this NYX brow pencil and brush in taupe.
- The last item in my kit is a pair of glasses – sadly necessary now if I want to actually see what I’m doing as I apply my makeup!
It’s not often that I wear all of them at once – perhaps for church, or a special dinner or outing. Working from home, I usually just wear a bit of lipstick or lip balm. But it’s nice to know that when I *do* want to go the whole hog, I have some tried and true favourites at the ready!
Hope you enjoyed this sneak peek inside my makeup kit! What are the items you consider essential?
Don’t forget to enter our great comp: you could Win a Smile Brilliant teeth whitening kit (value nearly $200 AUD) – closes Monday 20 April 2015!
I really need to overhaul my makeup kit pronto. Did you see the woman that borrowed a friends makeup to hid a pimple and ended up in a wheelchair with a staf infection? OMG, my girls borrow my kit all the time.
Ewww no I didn’t hear about that one! Miss 18 pinches my makeup too when she’s here …
That is a decent kit. It has only recently come to my attention how different women’s makeup kits can be. For example, I don’t own any foundation or skin cosmetics. My kit is heavy on eye cosmetics; pencil eye liner, gel eye liner, eye liner brush, eye shadow, 3 eye shadow brushes, mascara (of course) etc. Wow it sounds like I’m obsessed. Most days I don’t even wear it!
Isn’t that funny – I don’t use eyeshadow or eyeliner at all! So yes we are all very different!
I finally bought a BB cream the other day by Maybelline and it’s too pale. I need a shade darker but I’m not sure I like it. It makes my face shiny. I use Revlon One Step as it has the foundation and powder in one. I don’t use blush except at night. Eyeliner, mascara and brown eye shadow plus a Revlon colourstay lipstick are all part of my routine and have been for ten years! OMG I need to change my style!
I think you look fine the way you are Pinky! All BB creams are not the same – I hate anything that makes my face feel oily and shiny but the Garnier one really seems to work for me.
My 3 essentials are my lipstick, lipstick brush and lipstick pencil. Then pencil gives me a lovely outline that prevents my lipstick from “bleeding” into the skin around my lips. My lipstick is essential for touchups throughout the day and the lipstick brush is a “must have” so I can get to all the lipstick in the bottom of the tube. I couldn’t bear to throw it out knowing it wasn’t completely finished!
