I’ve titled this post “A Walk Down Memory Lane”, but perhaps what I should have called it is: “Memory Lane Doesn’t Exist Anymore”.
To celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary, hubster and I went for a walk through the city to reminisce and re-visit all the places that are special to us as a couple – Β only to find that most of them no longer exist!
-
- Rowes Arcade and food court (on Edward Street, between Adelaide Street and Queen Street) had a very special place in our hearts – not only is it where we shared our first kiss, but it is also where the hubster proposed. Admittedly, there is a very similar arcade close by next to Anzac Square, but it’s not quite the same, y’know?
- We wanted to stop for an ice cream at Post Office Square just like on our first date nearly 30 years ago – but although there were still plenty of lunch places, not one of them sold ice cream!
- We wandered past a couple of the buildings where we used to work – they’re all still there at least – but now have completely different tenants.
- And City Plaza, the ground level of the building I worked in when we actually got married – home to shops, Tracks nightclub, fountains and a food court – has now been replaced by two towering office blocks and a number of trendy eateries.
- After work, we would meet at the fountain at the top of the Queen Street Mall – but there’s no fountain there anymore …
- And don’t talk to me about the way they have desecrated King George Square! The lush greenery, inviting lawns, and fountains are gone. Now it is just a concrete jungle; the glare makes it impossible to sit and linger π .
- Even the hotel where we had our wedding night – River Plaza on Southbank – is now apartments.
At least we have each other, so we can go for a walk down memory lane together any time, even if the actual places are now part of Brisbane history!
What special places now only exist in your memories?!
The lack of fountains sucks now! The gov went OTT when we had water issues; I was working in state gov around then & they cut the water pressure in the toilets to be “green”. Only then you had to flush multiple times & probably used more water. Gov “logic” π
Yeah I know. How hard would it have been to plumb up the fountains to a rainwater/recycled water tank? Prob cheaper than getting rid of them altogether!
King George Square is so gross now!!
I know they wanted to make it more of a space for events but I think it’s horrible.
Love the photo of you two : )
Thanks Liz! Just a quick selfie π
Love the photo of you! I know it’s amazing how fast things change, and the places we remember disappear, and the whole scenery of a place alters – I can hear my Grandmother speaking inside me!!
Must be a sign we’re getting older …
What a lovely photo and also great to take the time to take a walk down memory lane. Unfortunately, after 27 years the city has changed. I remember my husband and I used to go to River Plaza for a weekend and look over the City and say we would live at Dockside. We married at Dockside hotel and lived in Amity Towers for 5 years it was wonderful. Happy Anniversary again to you both and congratulations!
OH how lovely that you remember River Plaza! For our 10th wedding anniversary we stayed at Rydges Southbank as that was about as close as we could get, but not being an apartment it just wasn’t the same (not that I was complaining, having a child free weekend when our kids were 6 and 4 was great!!!)
There is no longer a baked potato place in the Tea Tree Plaza food court where we ate after we bought my engagement ring . . . the Sahara resort and casino where we stayed in Vegas for our wedding is no more. Otherwise, a lot of our places still exist . . . that’s Adelaide for you.
LOL about Adelaide, and can’t believe they got rid of the Sahara, a Las Vegas icon!
