Is it just me, or are most of the homes built today kind of … well … bland?
Neutral colour palettes abound. Think beige, white, caramel, sand, stone, lava, cocoa, cream, latte, vanilla, mocha, chocolate, – okay now it’s starting to sound like a trip to the ice cream store! 😉
It’s not that I don’t like neutrals. Au contraire! I think they are great colours, or non-colours, as it were.
BUT. They need to be brought to life with colour, and this is where I find so many folk go wrong.
They forget about colour. Or maybe they are just scared by it?

I can understand. When it comes to big ticket items like carpets, tiles, kitchen cabinetry, furniture – you probably are best off sticking to boring neutral colours so they don’t date so much.
But please, please, please, peoples, let’s get happy and inject some colour into the mix!
In my home, we chose aqua and turquoise, which is very much a “colour du jour” but one I have loved since we painted our last house (a tiny worker’s cottage) with it in 2003, so for me, it’s more than a passing fancy 😉
Red is also an extremely popular accent colour at the moment.
(Trend to watch: I think by next Winter we will find that deep plum and amethyst are very much coming into their own.)
But in the meantime, over the summer months, it’s all about orange, lime, and other citrus brights …

So how do you take the blank canvas of a modern home – and give it personality, life, and colour?
With smaller ticket items: Cushions. Rugs. Vases. Table runners. Pictures on the Wall. Ornaments. Pot plants or flowers.
Add Colour to Your Home – what a difference!
Check out the pretend makeover I gave this bland room …
Looks heaps better with a splash of lime, thanks to some colourful cushions and other accessories, doesn’t it!
What is your favourite accent colour in decorating?
I definitely love some colors in the house. I particularly love red or burgundy in the lounge room. I also like to put colors on the walls but hubby is more the “cream” type. But we compromise by putting the walls cream and accessorize with a little bid of colors with the cushions and lamps for example.
I love the way colors in your home can influence your mood. In our last place we painted the bedroom a zen green. That space was a wonderful place to go and just relax. Can’t wait to paint our current place. I’m hoping this time for a slightly more vibrant green. Any suggestion?
Heck yes to colour! Not only do I wear bright colours I also have bright cushions and table cloths to our living areas. Colour = happy space I say. Love the lime green styling. 🙂
I love colour as well, black, white, charcoal, grey, and a splash of pink and maybe some yellow. My home is french/english/Hampton’s. I’m laughing as we all know that sounds pretty neutral but I promise you it’s not. xxx Rae
We’ve recently renovated – and definitely went for white walls – I think they’re perfect for showing off all our colourful treasures – we have loads of bright rugs, art works and kids stuff!!! Lots of red here too – including our front door
I usually will buy the piece that scares me a little. I love a little colour and try to push my boundaries. Rachel xx
We choose very plain colours to keep it light but it also means we can now pick our features wall colours!!!
Considering I live in a household of all boys it’s kind of crazy that my favourite accent colour is pink. I like to keep the big items boring … I mean neutral … and just add a dash of colour here and there.
It looks so much better with the green. I like a ‘highlight’ colour, but I’m definitely not one to splash colour around. Even my kids laugh when I wear something that’s not black and I’m totally aware that we are drowning in beige everytime we step in the front door… x
