When Your Bed is in Front of a Window

Janet Camilleri · 29/02/2016 ·

I’ve been dreaming about updating our master bedroom for quite some time.

At last the makeover is under way – I finally painted a feature wall! Although I love the result, it’s also drawn to my attention to the fact that our bed is in front of a window. Which is not ideal, but the only logical place for it.

no curtains

See what I mean? Awkward!

So I turned to Pinterest for some inspiration on how to handle my decorating dilemma.

4 Style Solutions for a Bed in Front of a Window

1 – I love this look (below) – the bold feature wall and the crisp white trim and linen, really draw attention to the lovely view out the window. Except: it’s a bedroom peoples. What about privacy?! And sadly, our bedroom does NOT have a nice outlook. Nobody wants to look at a shed! (Well, maybe the hubster does. But he’s weird that way).

2 – Pinterest has made me believe in the power of fairies. Or fairy lights anyway – as a great decorating tool!

3 – I’m quite liking this next example, where the curtains are drawn behind the bed (below). It’s a very sleek look, that reminds me of posh hotel rooms where the curtains often run the full length of the wall (even if the windows don’t).

boutique hotel style

4 – This one (below) is probably my fave – and the added bonus is we already have the white blinds, and I even have a bag of old curtains hanging around (excuse the pun)  …

black and white

5 – I love the light airy colours of this room, so just had to share it:

teal and white

Now for the ta-da moment – here’s my version!

The more observant may have noticed that I have also cheated with our bedhead, by draping another curtain over the top of it and pinning it to fit with bulldog clips. It’s a temporary measure, I would like to do something about the furniture … but that’s a story for another time.

Here are the before and after photos:

before and after

Our master bedroom makeover is very much a work in progress. I’m keen to introduce new bedding (whether a quilt, comforter or bedspread) but have yet to choose something that is right for us.

But in the meantime? I’ve lessened the impact of that dark timber bedhead (so 1990!) and now love having my bed in front of a window. It looks like it was always meant to be there!

What is your main decorating dilemma in your master bedroom?!

01.03.16 UPDATE: I’ve bought new bed linen at Spotlight – click through to have a sticky!

19.06.18 UPDATE: My bed is still in front of the window, but since I wrote this post I’ve updated the bedhead, the lamps, and the bed linen, and am mighty pleased with the results – even though we still haven’t bought new furniture, I think we’ve managed to make it work.

What do you think – much better eh?!

Looks great, Janet. Great inspiration boards too – I especially like #1 and #4. I recently watched a telly segment featuring all black interiors and now I want one too!

I think darker colours must be making a comeback!

Wow, you’ve done a great job. What a difference a few tweaks can make. You won’t recognise it when you have a new bedspread, but I agree, it’s important to get the right one and you’ll know when you eventually spot it. My biggest wish for a master bedroom is to have a double aspect with a nice view from each window.

In our next house I’m hoping for a MUCH bigger bedroom – and no window behind the bed!

Great work there Janet – I love a good bedroom makeover. I personally really liked the first picture – the colour on that wall is dramatic. But yes, it really isn’t practical with no curtains on a window in the bedroom… 😉

Maybe one day if we live on acreage … ?!

Looks great! I like the white and blue room as well, so nice and airy. My bed is under a window too (but a full sized one so the sill is only just above the mattress) which backs onto the fence of the ferals who live next door. They leave their back light on more often than not so I actually have a blanket hanging over my window lol. It’s a beautiful hot pink with white love hearts. So not sophisticated lol!

We have feral neighbours on that side too Tegan. They drive me mental …

The longer curtains look fantastic! Love the inspiration boards and how you applied them to your own room. Very clever!

Thanks Kirsten. Now we’ve got new bed linen I’m thinking about changing the curtains to a different colour but I’m not sure.

So very clever! I’m impressed with how you hid the bedhead. I love long curtains they add such elegance to a room. Can’t wait to see it all put together with your new linen. Thank you for linking up with #HIT xx

The longer curtains definitely look fab. It’s hard to know whether to pain the existing furniture or buy new? Have you decided what you will do? The white bedhead would work really well with the colours you have in your room. Can’t wait to see how the room evolves. x

I’ve decided I don’t have the time or dedication to paint the furniture 🙁 . Will replace it at some stage; we are in the process of buying a beach cottage so this bedroom suite can go there!
