Chatting with Leo Sayer

“THE WORLD HAS CHANGED” a lot since a fresh-faced Leo Sayer burst onto the scene back in the 70’s – but in 2015, Leo is still going strong and currently touring Australia.

Middle Aged Mama was privileged to get chatting with Leo Sayer recently about his reflections on Australia, pop life and more …

MAM: What do you love most about this stage in your life (Leo is 66)?

LEO: I love that I can use the seniors parking at the mall. I also love the fact that young people think because I’m older I’ve become wise and worth listening to. Yes, I’m really enjoying my age!

MAM: I read that moving to Australia was a lifelong dream of yours – you’ve certainly been to plenty of countries – so why Australia?

LEO: It’s a long story that started when I first visited here in 1974. The whole place was so easy going and they really seemed to like me and my music, so I instantly felt at home …

That feeling didn’t diminish through the many more times I came, and a few years ago it seemed good for both my career and wellbeing to take up a residency, which quickly led to citizenship. I’m very much at home now and I honestly have never been happier.

MAM: We’re happy to have you here! What gets your adrenaline pumping eg abseiling, skydiving, or getting in front of an audience?!)

LEO: I’m too old for any of those pursuits now, but yeah I really enjoy being on stage so that’s my buzz.

MAM: “MORE THAN I CAN SAY” is one of your biggest hits – describe one time when you have been left speechless.

LEO: Anyone who knows me, knows I’m never lost for words!

MAM: You actually had a range of different jobs before you got your big break in the music industry. Tell us about some of the other jobs you’ve done …

LEO: There were many. As a jobbing graphic designer in the late 60’s I was often out of work and had to take on many side jobs so I did some crazy things from working in hotels to washing plates in restaurants or helping fill out unemployment forms. The few jobs I had in arts were great, but this diversification carried on for a few years til I got my break, and got out of advertising and design.

MAM: You’ve had some financial setbacks along the way. What tips can you offer others, to help them pick themselves up after their own financial/legal struggles or setbacks?

LEO: It’s very hard to offer concrete advice because every case is different and in my business there are so many clever sharks around. I think you have to trust yourself, those people who you love. They are the only ones with you for the long term, anybody else is in it for the short term and they’ll be gone by the time they’ve made enough out of you. The music business looks like great fun –  and sometimes it is, but more likely it’s gonna be you making other people rich.

Keep your counsel close to you, and be patient.

MAM: Wise words indeed no matter what business you are in …

MAM: So what can we expect of the Restless Years tour?

LEO: I’m performing all the hits and a few songs off the new album. So far it’s going down very well, and my whole life is in this show. It’s a fun night for me and the band, and all the audience too!

MAM: Well Leo, thank you so much for your time – I’m looking forward to seeing the show tomorrow night!

What’s your favourite Leo Sayer hit?!
