Costumes from the Golden Years of Hollywood

I Must Confess: when we were kids, my sisters and I enjoyed nothing better than watching old movies on TV.

Our favourite was an old black and white movie called “The Buccaneer’s Girl”; we were also rather fond of the old Elvis movies.

So when we heard the Museum of Brisbane was hosting an exhibition of costumes from the golden years of Hollywood – naturally my sister and I just *had* to visit!

Sadly, we weren’t permitted to take any photos of the exhibition itself (Why is that? Does anybody know?).

We were completely entranced for a good couple of hours, as we looked at costumes worn by old Hollywood greats including Elizabeth Taylor, Katherine Hepburn, Debbie Reynolds, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Carmen Miranda, Betty Grable, and Ginger Rogers. Interestingly, the skinny mannequins of today just didn’t fill out the costumes anywhere near as well as the stars of yesterday did 😉 !

There were swimsuits worn by Esther Williams, and helmets and headdresses worn by the likes of Richard Burton and Marlon Brando; as well as design sketches, and numerous photos and clips of the movies that the costumes came from.

If you live in Brisbane or will be visiting soon, the exhibition continues until the 24th of May – and it’s well worth a visit. Even better, it’s free!
