The hubster and kidults will be shuddering when they read the title of this post.
You know how when your kids are little and they chuck tantrums in the supermarket, or announce to the street that mummy and daddy are in the shower together – in other words, embarrass the crap out of you?!
Well guess what, karaoke is the perfect revenge 😉 .
I used to be quite good at singing – I’ve been in a couple of school musicals, and in choirs which have performed at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Brisbane City Hall, and as far afield as Sydney and the Blue Mountains. I’ve also done the odd solo, and been a song leader at church.
But … that was all a fairly long time ago now.
So you would think that when I’m getting my karaoke on, it would not be an embarrassing experience.
But you would be wrong.
My First Time at Karaoke
My first time at karaoke was at an engagement party for one of the hubster’s workmates. I didn’t know a soul, so that – and a shot of dutch courage – was probably behind my decision to take the mike for a painful rendition of “Hopelessly Devoted to You” by Olivia Newton John. Needless to say, ONJ is safe from the likes of me.
Karaoke at the Pub
The second time was only a couple of years later, while we were travelling Australia with our caravan. It was very exciting to catch up with my penpal Tracy when we were in Adelaide, and we might have gotten just a *bit* carried away when we all went for a meal at the pub.
This time I didn’t worry about singing well – instead we belted out Love Shack by the B52’s, and had a ball!
That was in 2001, so it’s been quite a while since I’ve gotten my karaoke on.
Of course the hardest part of karaoke is choosing which song to sing. So here are three I’d love to try – though as they are all from the 70’s, I don’t know that the usual karaoke crowd would be familiar with them:
- “Top of the World” by the Carpenters (pretty sure Ness would approve of this one).
- “Paper Roses” as sung by Marie Osmond.
- “Step into the Sunshine” by Evie Tornquist – my mum used to say that I sounded exactly like Evie whenever I sang one of her songs 🙂 .
My family will be very relieved to know I have no immediate plans to get my karaoke on anytime soon, but it’s fun to put the wind up them!
Have you ever gotten your karaoke on? What song did/would you sing?!
