Newsflash: the 80’s, with all their emphasis on excess, are over!
So why have luxury brands become common?!
I’ve been pondering this subject (see, blondes CAN have deep thoughts occasionally! 😉 ) and came up with three reasons that luxury brands have become, well, common.
- Designer Label Stores – now at a shopping centre near you! It seems every time I turn around, there is a new luxury brand store opening in suburbia. I’m truly puzzled as to how these stores manage to keep their doors open. I can understand them being in the city centre, or at the airport (duty free, anyone?!) but … surburbia? Is there REALLY that much demand for their products?! Who can afford them? (Seriously, if YOU can – tell me your secrets!). Put your hand up if you carry a genuine Louis Vuitton handbag, buy soft furnishings at Laura Ashley, or have at least one frock from Prada, Gucci or Dior in your closet? ‘Cause I sure as heck don’t! The only designer labels I own, are thanks to my op shopping habit!
- It’s a Knock Off. Fact is though, all of us probably own goods that LOOK like designer labels – because the market place is flooded with knock-offs. Why spend big bucks on the real deal, when the imitation is almost as good – at least to the untrained eye?!
- Blame it on Social Media. What made luxury brands luxurious, was their very scarcity and their expense, making them highly desirable. They were status symbols; and as such, it’s a “big thing” to see or even own a luxury brand – which means it is social media worthy. And once something is shared on social media over and over again, it becomes common – even if it WAS a luxury brand to begin with!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this blog is a designer-free zone!
Go on, admit it – do you own any luxury brands?! Or have you ever shopped at one of THOSE stores at your local mall?!
Designer Brands are not what they used to be. They were once expensive, exclusive and actually represented quality. Now they are still expensive but not exclusive and much lower quality. And no wonder nobody can afford to buy a house when there is so much pressure to have all the things.
I just don’t understand the appeal of these big brands … even if I did have pots of money …
I don’t think I own any designer brands – it just doesn’t appeal to me. I wonder if it’s good that designer has become more commonplace or not.
Regardless, I will only ever own them if I happen to pick them up at a thrift shop – no matter how rich I was! Just seems a gigantic waste of money to me.
