My first girl crush was on Lucinda*; we were in Grade 5. I thought she had the most beautiful name; and she had pretty silvery blonde straight hair. Lucinda was the undisputed fashion leader in our grade, and wore all the latest trends. My favourites were a dark blue velvet skirt with tiny pink roses on it; and her cork platform sandals (hey it was 1976; don’t judge me!).
I must have talked about her a lot, because when I brought home the school photo that year and pointed her out (wearing THAT skirt and sandals – see pic!), my Mum sniffed and said that she thought my girl crush actually had a big nose. I was crushed. No not really, but it did help me see my idol had feet of clay – or cork, anyways 😉
Girl Crush Circa 1979
Speaking of Dolly, I’ve long had a girl crush on Lisa Wilkinson – she was the editor of Dolly back then, now the host of the Today Show.
After I finished school, Ellie* from my youth group was the girl I loved to hate my girl crush.
Ellie had everything I didn’t (or so it seemed to me) – a happy, stable family life; wealthy parents; and they all lived in a fabulous house with a pool. She was smart and had a great job; heaps of gorgeous clothes; and a car; while I was just a poor tertiary student.
All the guys agreed she was the hottest girl in our youth group and vied for her attention. It didn’t help when my boyfriend of the time confessed that he’d had his eye on HER, not me, initially!
To top it all off, she played keyboard in a band!
Yet for all that, when the hubster and I bumped into her years later, he couldn’t understand what on earth I’d ever seen in her!
Girl Crushing when you’re over 40!
Fast forward twenty (or more!) years, and it seems I’m still no stranger to the girl crush.
These days I’m girl crushing on quite a few of our own lovely Aussie bloggers … I find them truly inspirational.
I love reading their posts, seeing their social media and what’s happening on their blog. I swoon with happiness if by chance they respond to one of my tweets, or even visit and comment on my blog!
But … at the same time it is a two-edged sword, because then I start comparing myself and my little blog with all their comments, Facebook/Twitter/Instagram following, etc.
How do I find the happy balance?! If you have any secrets I’d love to hear them!
