How to Buy New Clothes when Hubby thinks you already have plenty

I’m feeling the itch to add some new outfits to my Spring / Summer wardrobe (I showed you some of the lace I was lusting after here).

My problem is HOW TO GET IT PAST THE HUBSTER, who thinks I already have a wardrobe full of clothes!

I’m sure I’m not alone, so here are my tips on how to buy new clothes when hubby thinks you already have plenty (and no I don’t endorse lying or sneaking purchases home – apart from anything, I’m a terrible liar so ALWAYS get caught out!).

1. What does Your Man Love to See you in?

Make sure you only buy items that you KNOW he’ll love. For example, a couple of months back I brought home a leather bikie-style jacket from Target. It was on special (see #2) which is always a good thing, but even then it was slightly more than I normally spend. BUT, I knew the hubster would love it! He also heartily approves of anything in denim and (it goes without saying), nice lingerie. So what does YOUR man particularly like to see you in?

Rocking a leather jacket!

I will give you one hint: most men prefer to see their partner in fitted clothes that show off their womanly shape (jelly rolls and all). Kaftans and tunics do NOT fall into this category as a general rule. (Not that this should stop you from wearing them if you like them, but if you want your man to be happy with your latest purchases, it’s not something I would recommend).

2. Shop the Specials

Only buy on special. I have perfected this art over the years and very rarely pay full price for anything. The leather jacket I’ve already mentioned was 25% off; the fitted lace dress (pictured top right) I picked up at Crossroads last week was $19.95 reduced from $49.95, and the hubster LOVED it. If you can prove you are shopping wisely and keeping an eye on the price, how can he complain?

3. Only Buy What You Really Love

Chances are, if YOU love it and feel good in it, HE will like it too. Also, it will help you to cut out any impulse buys that are “not quite right” – and over time your man will realise you only buy things that are truly worth buying – not some useless piece that you will toss in the closet and forget after you’ve worn it just once or twice.

4. Sponsor Me! Please?!

Hello, Katies? I love your clothes – sponsor me please?!

If you are a blogger, get sponsored by your favourite store (and if you’re not, maybe it’s time to start one!). I’m still working on this one myself – attention any would-be sponsors – I’m talking to YOU Just Jeans, Katies, and Crossroads!

I’ve noticed a few people floating around the blogosphere, proudly flaunting their “Official DFO Blogger”, and “Official Target Blogger” buttons, and posting stories about the items they used their sponsor money on, so they can review it on the blog of course. Jealous? Who me?!

5. Op Shopping

Again, this is a skill I have honed over many years, long before it became fashionable. You will be surprised at just what you can find. I found a fabulous pair of knee high leather Joanne Mercer boots for just $10 last Winter, that looked like they had NEVER. BEEN. WORN. New, expect to pay in the region of $200! (And how could hubster resist? They’re not known as CFM* boots for nothing!)

And, what man can begrudge you a shopping spree when it is at the OP SHOP. I know mine feels it would be pretty low to pick on me for not only shopping economically, re-using and recycling, but also supporting charity! The bonus is – for the equivalent of what you’d pay for one new item, you can bring home a whole bag!

6. Sell or Exchange

David Lawrence silk dress – I’ve worn it once to a wedding. Luckily I bought it from the op shop hey?! Should I keep it or …

Sell some of your pre-loved clothes on Ebay or Gumtree – and use the cash to fund your next purchase!

I’m sure we all have items hanging in our wardrobe that we no longer wear. Perhaps you bought an expensive dress for a wedding or other special occasion – and you know you’ll never wear it again. Get rid of it! Not only will you gain valuable space but you can make some dollars as well.

Or, you could always try a Clothes Swap party … costs nothing, but you’ll have a great time, get rid of stuff you don’t want anymore, and hopefully pick up some great “new to you” pieces!

7. Remember – HE is the one who benefits!

And finally, remind him that HE is the one who ultimately benefits, from having a wife that not only looks gorgeous and stylish (thereby making him look good too) – but is happy as well! 😉

Well ladies there you have it, my top tips for getting your husband on board with your little shopping “habit”.

Of course I’m always looking for new ways to sneak ensure he is happy with my purchases so would love to hear if YOU have any tricks to share!
