Never say never … not so long ago I declared the off the shoulder dress trend just wasn’t for me.
Then I tried on a pretty chambray off the shoulder dress at Ice, and I was converted!
Alas, the hubster and I have agreed to go on a bit of a spending freeze at the moment so sadly, I left it behind in the store.
On the weekend I posted the pic below on social media, with the following caption:
I am in love with this dress I tried on at Ice yesterday … But I promised the hubster I would be a good girl and be a bit more careful with the budget, so I didn’t bring it home. Maybe Santa could get it for me?! If so, I’m a size 12. K thx bai!
I was full of regret that I hadn’t brought this beauty home with me.
Then I wondered: could I MAKE the dress I wanted? Surely there was a pattern on the internet to help me out!
These instructions on how to make an off the shoulder dress seemed pretty simple and straight forward. And as I had a bit of spare material in my sewing box, I decided to give it a bash.
Here is how my little sewing experiment turned out …
It must be said, I am a novice seamstress at best; this was just a test-drive to see if I *could* do it, before forking out money for fabric. It’s far from perfect; to be honest it’s a bit short for my liking, and the gathers at the back were almost non-existent – but I was making do with the fabric I had.
However, now I know how to make an off the shoulder dress, I am keen to buy some pretty fabric and make a “proper” version. Trust me, if you can sew a straight seam, and gather elastic, you have all the skills you need to make this frock.
Have I inspired you to try to make an off the shoulder dress?! Or would you be happier buying one?!

Despite two lots of six week courses at TAFE on how to sew I never mastered the craft. It suits you Janet.

Pinky I did a couple of night courses at TAFE too and still found it a challenge. Then I did a Knitwit stretch sewing course (this was in about 1991) and found that was much easier. I’m still not great at it though and it’s pretty rare I will actually wear something I’ve made. But I get that bee in my bonnet every now and then where I just *have* to sew something!
