I Don’t Like Strapless Wedding Dresses

I’m going out on a bit of a limb here: I must confess, I don’t like strapless wedding dresses.

Badly fitting strapless wedding dresses – she moves, but the bodice doesn’t; or she just has no hope of filling it out, leaving a gap at the neckline!

If I was Prime Minister of Australia, I think that I would ban them.

I do apologise if your wedding dress was strapless; I don’t mean to offend you. First of all – I’m sure you looked beautiful on your big day! And secondly, I bought my wedding dress at the end of the (over-the-top) eighties, when it was a case of the more sequins, beads, lace, crystals, pearls, sparkle and satin, the better, so my gown probably wouldn’t be your cup of tea, either. (Although I loved my dress and felt like a princess on my big day, I’m aware that it looks quite dated now. Not that I will ever fit into it again *sigh* …).

But that’s nothing compared to the fad for strapless wedding gowns; it feels like strapless has been the #1 choice for brides for the past ten years or more. A quick spot of research and what do you know, I’m not far wrong – turns out 73% of brides in one poll done in 2011, chose a strapless gown!

Thankfully the trend seems to be waning, at long last. I personally want to thank the Duchess of Cambridge for single-handedly turning the tide with her demure – long-sleeved! – wedding gown.

Are Strapless Wedding Dresses Cheaper?

I remember talking to another bride-to-be at the office way back in 1990; we were both due to get married later that year, and she told me she’d chosen a strapless dress because they were so much cheaper! (Even though she was having a June wedding – I’m thinking she might have been just a bit chilly …). Of course, strapless wedding dresses have surged in popularity since then, so maybe that’s no longer the case?

If a strapless dress is done well, and fits nicely, it CAN be a lovely look.

Why I Don’t Like Strapless Wedding Dresses

Fit is everything … and I don’t mean you have to be perfectly fit, or model thin, to go strapless on your wedding day. In fact, I’d venture to say that more buxom brides look much better in a strapless wedding dress, than their skinny sisters; it really does seem to make the most of their (ahem) … assets.

All too often however, strapless wedding dresses DON’T fit well. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen a bride in a boned, strapless wedding dress turn around to look at something – and her bodice stayed put. There’s no give in the things; surely they can’t be comfortable?

The other bad look is when the bodice juts out proudly in the bosom area. Trouble is, the actual bride inside it has no hope of actually filling it out; there is a huge gap between her chest and her dress!

Isn’t it nice to see some variety in wedding dress necklines?

Eventually I suppose, our daughter will get engaged and if she should choose a strapless wedding dress, I’m sure she will look absolutely beautiful – and I just might find I have to eat my words (or delete this blog post)!

Is there a style or trend in wedding dresses that you really don’t like?
