I Wrote A Book – and I Liked it!

Janet Camilleri · 09/07/2013 ·

diary of a sahm 001Have you read the latest #1 Australian Best Seller – Diary of a SAHM by our very own Jess Newman?

If you haven’t, do yourself a favour and order it, PRONTO. It’s a very read-able, very relate-able tale from the very like-able Jess. I had several AHA! moments as I read it, and I’m sure you will too.

I really take my hat off to Jess for following her dream and not only writing a book, but publishing it as well. What an incredible feat.

Believe me, I know. Because I’ve written and published a book too!

They (whoever “they” are)  say you should “write what you know”. So my book is called “Clues to your Calling”, because I was so ecstatic at age 30 (or thereabouts) to realise that I was actually good at something. I really did have a talent that most people don’t. I had a purpose for being on this planet! I was so excited I just had to share it with others – and having realised that I am a WRITER – naturally,  I penned a book to help others to find THEIR calling.

Clues to your CallingIt was an absolutely amazing journey, but it is a HUGE commitment. Think about it: writing the book is only the beginning!

There’s the editing, proof reading, layout, cover design, ISBN, getting endorsements, sourcing a printer and getting quotes, receiving the boxes of books, the launch, publicity, getting the book into bookstores …

I have to be honest, I don’t think I made any money out of it. But that’s not why I did it. I did it because:

  • I wanted to see if I could (can you tell I love a challenge?);
  • I believed in my message and that it had worth for others;
  • I believed it was what I was meant to do!

I’m sure Jess knows what I mean 😉

Even though it’s ten years ago now, I’m still VERY proud of that little book. My hubster says it’s the best book he’s ever read (and he swears he’s not biased because he knows and loves the author … and we won’t go into the fact that he’s not a reader and has probably only read a dozen books since leaving school …)!

I still have a few copies so if you’re interested, grab one now before it goes out-of-print! You can find out more on my “Books” page (yes, “Books” – I’ve actually released more than one – this writing books thing is a bit addictive …).

Have you ever thought about writing a book? What would it be about?

    How fabulous Janet! I didn’t know you wrote two books! Jess’ book is on my bedside mountain of books to read…I keep flicking through to random sections reading a few pages, then stopping myself and putting it back down….summer is going to be head down, bum up in books 🙂 As for thinking about writing a book myself, of course I have! Haven’t we all? Josefa from #teamIBOT x

    LOL Last week I remembered that I wrote a book . I hd completely forgotten. My brain is mush. And it was so amazing re-reading through my words with fresh eyes, a few extra years under my belt. I love it because it is absolutely where I was at, at the time.

    Well aren’t you all a motivated bunch! I would like the challenge of writing a book, and I have a few ideas… now all is need is the time. But I have the rest of my life so there’s no rush.

    It is definitely something to be proud of. So much time and effort goes into a book. But it’s worth it!

    Wow Janet – what other little secrets have you got! That is awesome that you’ve written a couple of books! I’ve often thought about it but have never thought I could actually do it. Who knows…maybe one day??! Min xo

    You wrote a book? Awesomeness!
    Very supportive of Jess too. She’s a goer that girl and love that she is following her dream.
    I love writing my books. Definitely my calling. What I love more is the joy it brings the readers (in my case, kids). Alas, I too am not making money yet. But that’s not why I did it either. It was to share a part of my heart so that others could nurture and treasure a part of theirs.

    Love it – i am writing my ebook right now (my dream is it will grow into a “proper” book someday) but after that i am turning my attention to the book that is waiting to be written by me. I am thinking of pursuing traditional publishing first and see where it takes me – if there is no interest i will still write it… I am so inspired by all the authors and soon-to-be-published authors in my circle these days

    Yes, I wrote and self-published one when Bell was 1 year old. Now looking back, there is so much I want to add, so it’s on my list to do a second edition.
    Isn’t it wonderful to follow your heart?
    xx
