Is it Easier to be Stylish in a Cool Climate?

Janet Camilleri · 04/11/2013 ·

Here’s a question for you: Is it easier to look good in a warmer or cooler climate?

Here in good ol’ Redlands, we enjoy a sub-tropical climate. That means it’s quite warm (and humid) for about 9 months of the year.

There are lots of things I love about this:

  • Simple summer dressing;
  • Our outdoor lifestyle means we naturally develop a sun-kissed glow, even with SPF 50 and sunhats;
  • More relaxed styles;
  • Pretty sandals and pedicures to show off our tootsies.

summer

On other days it’s not so fun. It’s really hard to look glamourous when you’re sweating like a pig, your make up melts, and the humidity gives you hair a mind of it’s own! I console myself that at least I’m not in Darwin (which I’m sure is a lovely city but hot all year round, isn’t that right Essentially Jess?!).

Having the warm weather for most of the year, it’s not surprising that I fantasise about living in a cooler clime. After all:

  • Layering can be so much fun!
  • In Winter, we get to wear boots. Love boots!
  • Now I’ve found the perfect jeans for my figure, it’d be great to be able to wear them more. (I know some folk think jeans are fine year round, but I just CANNOT wear jeans in the summer months – I don’t know how anybody does, it’s just too darn HOT!)
  • Cold weather to me equals snazzy city dressing. Just think of how stylish people look in cities where it’s cooler (Melbourne), than in my home town, where we have a much more sloppy relaxed look.

Winter

Of course there are downsides to living where the Winter is long – dry skin, a red nose, and looking like a Michelin man dressed in all the layers needed to keep warm. Not to mention shorter days …

The jury’s out!

I Must Confess: All I’ve decided is that it makes good sense to spend 75% – 80% of my clothing budget on outfits for Summer. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some shopping to do 😉

    I prefer wearing pants and not having to shave my legs because I’m lazy. Ahem. However, I don’t really enjoy freezing cold weather. In between, Autumn or Spring are the best! I don’t know how anyone could wear jeans in summer either. No thanks.

    I agree, we just don’t seem to look at snazzy as those who live in cooler climates, and to do so requires a lot more accessorising, money and work! I LOVE jeans but rarely wear them here because it’s too hot! Then again I do love that I don’t have to rug up and wear SOCKS – ick, not a fan of socks… Enjoy that shopping lovely xx

    I’m currently in a singlet and daggy shorts so the hotter climate definitely doesn’t lead to style here!

    I think I look and feel better in winter / cooler times of year. It might be because I don’t like the heat but it’s also coz I think winter clothes are more stylish and cover bits that are best covered 😉

      Yes, I’m probably not doing anybody any favours exposing my bingo wings!

    Hi there. I agree with those who likes jeans so they can be lazy with shaving :-), but I also love the simplicity of summer wear. Yes, a spring/summer wardrobe is for me, and lucky, too, because we don’t get a long winter in central Qld.

      I don’t think we had Winter at all this year Liz!

    I love cool weather but dress better in warmer weather. I love dresses, pencil skirts, heels etc which all suit warmer weather better. I hate jeans, but the coat I wear in winter makes me look so good, I love it.

    Good call Janet! I also fantasise about being a fashionista in Melbourne with classy coats, rocking boots and gorgeous scarves. Not so much need for that where I live but I still dream!

      Me too Kirsty 🙂

    I am also torn. I love spring/summer and being warm but I love the fashion of winter (scarves and boots) but I absolutely hate being cold! Hate getting out of showers, hate walking outside, running from the car into my office, waiting for the heater to kick in! Yeah think I am definitely a spring/summer girl!

      I dunno Zita – I reckon it’s easier to warm up in Winter, than cool down in Summer!

    I love summer dressing for the first few months of summer and then I look forward to winter dressing and vice versa. Most of my wardrobe is catered more for summer too because I can layer all my pieces.

      I know what you mean – I get bored after a while too! Isn’t God good how He gave us different seasons?!

    Any excuse for shopping is fine with me as I love to shop. I love dresses, don’t own a pair of blue jeans.
    I think I like summer dressing, this summer the colours I am loving, the citrus green and the hot pink, teamed with black and white. xxx

    I’d love to have cold weather only for Christmas but, other way, I love warm weather. I dislike jackets and boots. Even when I was in Canada I use to wear boots only if I absolutely had too. I love all summer clothes. But, I’m the exact opposite of being a fashionista!

    We have our first real hot day (37 degrees) here today and I’m dreading it and summer. I’ve packed on a few kilos not being able to exercise and well I just don’t look or feel comfortable unless I’m layered up. Instead of racing out and buying new summer clothes I’m going to get out my exercise gear. Although I might wait for a cooler day to start. oh dear excuses already, I don’t stand a chance.

    Thanks for linking up for my One New Thing a Week Challenge. We have some exciting new things kicking off this week. Would love for you to pop over and do a guest blog.

      I would love to do a guest post for you! Not sure what I could write about though … will have to think. My own blog is such a hungry animal and needs constant feeding, sometimes hard to think of things except for that! xxx

    Lol on the budget! I think it is easier to look stylish in a cooler climate. There is nothing that can be done to make dripping with sweat look good!

      Totally agree Rhi xxx
