Do you ever have those moments where you look back on your life – and wince at some of the dumb things you’ve done?
Or am I the only one that makes mistakes 😉 and then shudders when remembering them?
Just Some of the Dumb Things I’ve Done …
- I insisted on wearing my absolute favourite party dress to go bike riding when I was about 11 or 12 – and promptly ruined it forever when I got a big rip in it 🙁 .
- Wearing far too much makeup (in an attempt to cover my bad skin) when I was about 16 or 17.
- Wearing dark tan pantihose with my pastel pink formal dress. Yuk.
- Going a bit nuts with my first credit card when I was young and single. It felt like “my” money so why shouldn’t I spend it? I quickly realised that I was paying a lot of interest for the privilege, which was not so smart!
- Some of my ex-boyfriends, and my ex-fiance … what the hell was I thinking?!
- Buying a CREAM couch as my first major furniture purchase when I was 21. Needless to say, it didn’t stay cream for long … ended up more of a dirty grey beige.
- Making a disparaging remark about my boss being a Jehovah’s Witness to a new workmate. I was trying to help put them in the picture, because the boss always disappeared when we had morning tea to celebrate birthdays. Of course you guess it – the boss was actually in her office and would have heard every word. How embarrassment! (She was actually a lovely boss and never rubbed my face in it but I felt terrible!)
- Trying to make Middle Aged Mama a primarily fashion and style blog, two or three years ago. I was mistakenly trying to copy what some of my favourite bloggers were doing. I quickly found that I’m just not passionate enough about it to write about it constantly. Once in a while yes, but not every single post! In blogging (as with many things in life), it’s important to take your eyes off what others are doing and just concentrate on your own journey …
- Then there was the time I met a lovely young couple at a conference, and asked when the baby was due. Yes, really. I still can’t quite believe I did it, it’s one of those things you should NEVER, EVER do. In my defence, I was nervously trying to make conversation and it just popped out of my mouth before I realised I’d said it. Oops.
- Bringing a second cat into our family last year. Unless you introduce them when they are kittens, I really wouldn’t recommend it. Luckily our story had a happy ending, when Mr 23 decided to adopt Seth – so while we may still have two cats in our household, they are kept completely separate.
Only ten things! That’s not so bad really is it?! (Maybe number 11 should be sharing really bad unflattering pictures of myself online … #keepingitreal)
Of course, I’ll no sooner hit “publish” on this post, and I’m sure I’ll think of several more dumb things that I should have included on the list! (Perhaps I will have to write “I’ve Done All the Dumb Things: Part 2”!)
So do I regret them? Apart from some of the exes, not really! They have all helped shape me into the person I am today. Hopefully not just a bit older, but a bit wiser too 😉 .
I hope you’ve had a giggle over my list of dumb things … would love it if you returned the favour and left a comment about one of yours!
LOVE point 5!
You crack me up!
….my list, well I, like you, have done a swag of dumb things BUT learnt early in life from my older brother ‘what gets you in trouble’. Plus having an introvert personality means I don’t rush in…..
BUT one day my mother in law and I were talking about how hot the weather had been – particularly overnight and I told her how ‘hot’ my husband , her son, was in bed!!!!!!!!! Oops ?The look on her face was priceless and I was a delightful shade of red! My husband….rolling around on the floor laughing at me and my innocence…..
Oh how embarrassment!!!! But I know what you mean, my hubster is the same!
I’m pretty cautious but I’m sure there are some dumb things I’ve done when I look back – or at least some I’d do differently. I asked the pregnant question to my hairdresser (who’d had her baby about 4mths before!) lucky I walked out with some hair still left on my head!
Haha. I’ve definitely done the too much make up thing when I was younger. Now I hardly wear any. Plus numerous crimes against fashion and hideous perms. And just this morning I was looking for an invoice for my dental procedures and it was in the recycle bin! Have no recollection of throwing it out. Dumb and Dumber should be my middle name!
They’re not so bad, Janet. I’m sure I’ve done dumber things than that. Like everything I wore in the 80s. A bright yellow dress covered in black spots and worn with a black cumberbund? What was I thinking? LOL
I did your No. 1 trick myself. I was somewhere younger than 8 and was given a new skirt. I usually got hand me downs but Mum bought this skirt at a church fete and I was in love. It was a gathered flouncy cotton – green with white polka dots and red rick rack binding. Mum told me not to wear it playing but you guessed it I did and ripped a huge L shaped tear in it. I was so upset (and so was Mum lol). I have done lots of ridiculously awful things in my life but I refuse to think about them!
