Let’s Get One Thing Straight …

Janet Camilleri · 18/04/2013 ·

. . . HAIR.

Do you straighten?

Just last week I was part of the Bigger, Badder Hair Brigade on With Some Grace, showing off my fabulous 80s frizzy perm. Back then, straight hair was daggy, only for hippies from the 70’s – whereas now of course it’s the “in thing”.

Not surprisingly, Miss 16’s daily beauty regime includes considerable time straightening her hair. Maybe it’s time we bought her a hair-straightening brush?

In the meantime, we jumped at the chance to try out JoBaz Everyday Straight Hair – promising 3 months of straight hair, all in a small DIY home kit.

JoBaz Everyday Straight Hair

Her hair is naturally fine and wavy, and she has been colouring it regularly for the last two years or more. In fact when my Dad rings, he will jokingly ask: “And what colour is Miss 16’s hair this week?!”
Before straightening

 The Process in 10 Steps:

1. Wash hair and towel dry.

2. Apply straightening gel and leave in for 10 – 20 minutes (she left it on for 20 minutes). I have to say, the smell was not terribly pleasant and reminded me of the perming solution I knew so well in the 80s!

Straightening gel has been applied

3. Rinse hair for 3 – 6 minutes.

4. Towel dry hair.

5. Apply the Keratin protein and leave in for 10 minutes, then rinse out for 1 to 3 minutes.

6. Blow dry hair until it’s approximately 80% dry.

7. Straighten hair as best as possible.

8. Apply fixing cream using a comb, being careful to ensure hair is perfectly straight. Leave to develop for 10 minutes.

9. Rinse hair for several minutes, then use Keratin protein again as you would a conditioner (ie leave in for 1 minutes, rinse out for 3).

10. Dry and style hair as normal, give it a quick straightening again to seal.

That’s it!

Note that you can’t wash your hair for 3 days afterwards, and you shouldn’t tie your hair back either.

Miss 16 finds she still has to straighten the ends each morning, but it takes only a minute or two instead of 15. Also, she is pleased that her hair doesn’t go fuzzy in the Queensland humidity!

The Verdict

It takes about 3 hours and 4 showers to use JoBaz Everyday Staight Hair, but if you like to wear your hair straightened most of the time, this is a worthwhile product. Your hair may not wind up perfectly straight but it will definitely make straightening a lot quicker and easier. And at RRP $29.95, it is a huge saving on getting the procedure done at the hairdressers.

I can’t help wondering if Miss 16 will one day look back at her straightened hair and giggle (like I do at my 80′ s pics!) – or if she will remember how HAWT she looked when she was 16!

Straightened hair

How lovely is my daughter? I’m so thankful to have a daughter who is beautiful inside AND out, and doesn’t mind being a guinea pig for the sake of my bloggy adventures!

That is so cheap! It looks like the results are good too. What I lov about keratin is that itimproved your hair doesn’t ruin it!

When you have really curly hair it must be great. Luckily I only have a slight wave so it only takes me 5 minutes to straighten if I want to. Will tell my daughter about this who definitely spends hours straightening her hair.

    And you daughter is gorgeous!

I saw your review of it – you hair looks a lot thicker than my girl’s though – good to hear it lasted!

Looks like it did a great job! I would struggle with the bit where you have to use a straightener LOL. I have lost any wave in my hair from using henna for the past few years. It has made it thicker and smoother and really healthy, but now that I want to go back to blonde I have to go on a 3 year mission to go from red to brown henna, then grow out the henna… sigh.

Hi Jasmine, have you heard of the JoBaz Hair Colour Remover? It might be worth a try and save you all that growing out!

Awww, she is beautiful! The hair looks great! I’ve got very fine (read: terribly thin) hair and it’s mostly tamed with some argon oil (? like Moroccan oil) and a straightener. I used to perm mine too, and it’s been coloured for YEARS now! Once you start it’s hard to stop!

Glad you are testing this! i have well i call it terrible hair and would love to know how well this goes. 🙂
(no photos of my 80’s perms exist ! i think)

    Fantastic!

I use hair relaxer creams, they are the only things that work for my curls. They reduce the afro puff down to a manageable amount if I use a hair straightener. However, once I wash they curl up once again but with less ‘fro volume.

I hope she looks back and realises what a fox she is, but I hope she realises it now also! I have very fine hair and it takes about 2 minutes to straighten, which I do rarely when I go out! x

I have quite thick and curly hair so I can either stay curly or go straight….just depends what mood I’m in. Sometimes when it’s really humid it’s a losing battle and I give up and stay curly. Mostly though I prefer to go straight as it is easier to keep it looking good. I just run the straightener over it each morning and I’m right to go. When I leave my hair curly – I wake up looking like a fuzz ball! I didn’t know about this product. Very interesting!

My hair is so straight that I have never had to straighten it. Instead I would wrap bits of rag around it trying to make it have a bit of a wave. Either that or leave it in braids for days in the hope when I took it out it would be curly

You know, I have the straightest hair. EVER! So, I thought it was such a curse in the 80’s! Of course now, well, it’s all the in thing! But I still have a straightener to you know, get that “finished look”! 🙂

Why thank ya kindly Miss Grace. My hair is pretty straight too so I know exactly what you mean!

do i have to apply the whole process again after i shower??

    • Janet Camilleri says

Hi Monika, I think you have to rinse your hair (4 showers!) about 4 times throughout the process – so it IS a bit of mucking around.
