Macarons or Macaroons?

What is all the fuss about macarons – and should it be macarons or macaroons?!

These are macarons – not to be confused with macaroons

Despite the use of either word on many cafe menus, macarons and macaroons are NOT the same thing.

I vaguely remember my sister baking coconut macaroons when we were kids (funnily enough, that same sister LOATHES coconut today!).

Macarons however seem to have only arrived on the scene more recently. They are more like a flavoured meringue – hard on the outside, soft on the inside, and two are sandwiched together with a butter cream.

I Must Confess: I’ve fallen in love with macarons, after I discovered them on my recent cruise, and have been searching for a local supplier ever since my return.

Turns out, any McCafe stocks a range of macarons, so I gave them a whirl. Sadly (or perhaps it’s just as well for my waistline!) – they were poor imitations of the ones I’d enjoyed on my holiday.

You’d be better off seeking out a specialty macaron cafe, like Whisky Business at Capalaba, if you want a taste of a REAL macaron.

In fact, I was so impressed by the macarons at Whisky Business – that I chose to have a high tea for the girls there, in honour of my birthday!

And now I think I’m all macaron’d out … for a few days anyway 😉 .

Are you a macaron lover?!
