Why did we think it was a good idea to put a man on the moon, BEFORE discovering a cure for the common cold?!
I had another post all ready to go but then Kirsty sucked me in by asking us to CONFESS about our earliest memory and I just couldn’t resist. (That’s two weeks in a row I’ve stayed on topic peoples! Are you jealous of my awesomeness?!)
It was July 1969 and I was just 2 1/2 and exceedingly pinged off because PLAY SCHOOL WASN’T ON.
Instead, my mother and her best friend from across the road, were glued to the TV watching some stupid moon landing. What the!!!!!
It’s the earliest memory I can pin a date on. I also remember photos being taken where I am holding my new baby sister (it must have been around the same time, as she was born in April 1969), but I’m not sure if I’m remembering the actual event – or just the photos.
Hubster says he can remember being in his cot! Although this may not be as amazing as it sounds. You see, he was the youngest child in his family so there was no urgency to move him into a “big boy’s bed”. He could have been 5 for all we know!
Mr Almost 19 also blew me away a few years back, as we drove past the Thornlands Dance Palais (community hall).
Out of the blue he said, “Mum, did we ever go there? I remember sitting on a rug and playing musical instruments”. He was right – I used to take him to a playgroup there but stopped going when I fell pregnant with Miss 16, as the morning sickness really knocked me around. So he would have been not quite two years old!
Miss 16 isn’t sure what her earliest memory is, but she does have a very clear recollection of her 2nd birthday party – where we had a picnic with family at a park at Wynnum. Miss 16 says she was “totally humiliated” when we lifted up her skirt to admire the new Pooh Bear knickers she was wearing (they’d been a birthday present from one of her aunties). Oh dear – I hope we haven’t scarred her for life!
One thing I am a bit annoyed about is that neither of our children remembered that we read to them every night before bed, right up til school age. Here I was thinking we deserved a parent of the year award – and they don’t even remember! What the!!!! So if your children are small, I guess the moral of the story is don’t sweat the small stuff – chances are your kids won’t remember anyway …
It’s Monday, so I’m joining up with Kirsty from My Home Truths for I MUST CONFESS, and Alicia at One Mother Hen for the OPEN SLATHER blog link ups

Unfortunately my first memory isn’t as exciting as the man on the moon! I think the earliest I remember is when I was 2-3 as well. Thanks for visiting the blog today x

It’s hard to figure out an “earliest memory” – I guess I’m lucky I have something so momentous to pin it on!
Mystery Case says
I must ask my girls what there first memory is! Loved your post and well done on staying on topic! I’m all ready to go with the frizz factor bad hair but we are having a break next week I hear. Looking forward to linking up again soon.
Janet says
I will still be “confessing” next Monday even without a linky!
Emily @ Have a laugh on me says
Wow that is amazing your son remembers that play group! And we read to our kids every evening as well – but like you say I should take a photo so they believe in years to become. Love the pic BTW xx
Janet says
Good idea – our kids only believed us when we showed them photos!
Alicia says
That is such a cute photo! It’s very hard to pinpoint an earliest memory. I am going to have to ask my son what his is, I am sure I will be amazed, because it will be something that I have completely forgotten about and he has remembered. The moon landing is such a good memory for you to have 🙂
Janet says
Yes my kids amaze me with the things they remember – often I don’t remember it at all!
Rhianna says
Gosh the earliest I can remember is about 6 and half. It is really interesting hearing all the different things that stick in people’s minds over the years isn’t it?
Janet says
They say it is easiest to remember things that have a strong emotion attached to them – so I was obviously REALLY ticked off that Play School wasn’t on …
Kirsty @ My Home Truths says
What a memorable first memory Janet! I have nothing quite so amazing – I have a bunch of memories of being a toddler and being scared of a picture of the Sydney Opera House at night, as well getting a doll for xmas and laying all over our pet dog. Looking back now, he was a real trooper to put up with me! Thanks for playing along again Janet!
Janet says
It’s always a pleasure Kirsty xxx

LOL, this is brilliant. Clearly Janet we are of the same ‘vintage’ (and a damn good one it is too!). I too was 2 1/2 (ok, closer to 3) when man went to the moon however my sister wasn’t yet born – she would make her appearance a week or so later. Go you for remembering the moon landing, I only remember my matchbox cars!
G. xx
Janet says
Nice to meet a similarly “mature” blogger!
Trish says
I am a bit more vintage than you , my brother was born in 1969 too. I think my earliest memory is his 1st birthday…then my sister’s arrival in 1971. Interesting how our memories are tied to sibling arrivals.
Janet says
Obviously a very momentous occasion in a tiny tot’s life!
Ness says
Wow, that is amazing that you remember the moon landing and yes, how incredibly rude to interrupt Play School for THAT. Hmph. Oh, and that photo of you and your sister is just adorable. xo
Janet says
I know. What WERE they thinking?!
