I boast on my Flying Solo author profile that one of the joys of being a solopreneur is that “I never suffer from Sunday-night-itis”.
But while that may be true, I do still find myself with a bad case of Monday-itis on a pretty much weekly basis (holidays excluded!).
This may seem strange, when you consider that I:
- work from home;
- love what I do;
- am my own boss;
- and usually feel almost annoyed when Friday rolls around, as I feel like I’ve just hit my working stride and have to take a break for two days!
So while it’s true that there’s no Sunday-night-it-is here, sitting at my desk on a Monday morning is still a struggle.
But why?!
I think what I really find difficult, is not so much Mondays, as switching gears.
I find it hard to “turn off” at the end of a workday; and especially on Fridays.
And Monday-itis? That’s because it takes effort (never a good thing on a Monday morning!) to go from the easy going, relaxed pace of the weekend, and snap back into workday mode.
I haven’t worked out the best way to handle it yet, but here are some of the options I’ve tried to ease the transition:
- going for a walk before starting work to kickstart those endorphins;
- fluffing around on social media for an hour or two, or catching up on personal emails, before actually doing any “work”;
- jumping straight into a project and immersing myself in work as soon as I sit down;
- procrastinating with a cup of tea or a sweet treat;
- even going back to bed and starting work after lunch (only prolongs the inevitable!).
And not working at all on a Monday, just means that I end up dealing with Monday-itis – on a Tuesday instead.
I must confess: once I get into it, and/or by the time lunch time rolls around, my Monday-itis has thankfully moved on for another week.
Mondays – love ’em or hate ’em?!

Combine 2 and 4 and then get into it!

Haha for a few years I was like, wait what day of the week is it – aren’t they all full on? before the Little Mister started school! Now that he’s in a Monday to Friday routine (along with my breadwinning husband), I still feel the fatigue on a Monday and the joy of a Friday – just like when I was working full time! Luckily, Mondays are actually my flexible, time to myself, day. It’s wonderful. I catch up on home admin and blogging and then I recover a bit before school pick up! It’s all going to change next year with a baby! Eek!

Yes I remember those days – it was like “what’s a weekend? I work 24/7” LOL … here’s hoping your bub is a placid and cooperative one! 😉

Would making a to do list on Sunday afternoon/evening help to ease your mind out of the weekend and make the transition easier?
Janet Camilleri says
I guess it’s worth a try Wendy! Thanks for the tip.

Monday is my blog research day, so while having breakfast I will take a look at the schedule and see what the planned topic for the week is and decide if that’s what i’m going to stick to. Then once I’ve attended to emails and spend sometime on social media, before heading out for a coastal walk. I find getting out for this walk, clears the head of the home duties stuff and allows space for the blog post ideas to start flowing. Then by the time i’m home again and freshened up and fed, I’m usually motivated to start work.

I started a morning walk about a month ago, and already would be lost without it. As you say it’s a great opportunity for the ideas to flow!
