When you’re looking for home decor ideas, a trip to your local display village can really get the creative juices flowing.
The husbear and I recently visited some newly opened display homes and took lots of photos. I love seeing if I can identify the latest trends, while he looks for ideas and inventions we might be able to use and adapt in our own home (he is a bit of a handy husbear after all); we love getting inspo from display home interiors!
What’s New in Display Homes
Here are just some of the features we noted in these brand new homes:
- Wallpaper – wallpaper for feature walls is still big, and the patterns seem to be getting bigger and bolder too. Is it just me or does this one look like a toddler has been let loose with a crayon?!
Not loving this next one, I have to say:
- Vaulted ceilings – While high ceilings are still very much in style, now they are raked or vaulted. It definitely does make this small area below look more spacious, don’t you think?
- Wide front doors – One of the things which dates our home is the front door with adjacent window, and we do have plans to replace it with a wide door in time. Mind you, I don’t know why so many builders insist on front doors with clear glass panels in them, personally I prefer a bit of privacy!
This one looks very much like our own front door, except on a grander scale …
- Interior doors with glass panels – Speaking of glass panels in doors, this is definitely a trend inside as well, with frosted glass or perspex doors on everything from wardrobes to kitchen cupboards to bathrooms. Can’t say I’m a fan of them on toilets, they might be frosted but they still don’t leave much to the imagination.
- Dark and moody bathrooms – It seems we’re moving away from our fascination with light, white and bright bathrooms (including the ubiquitous subway tiles), as several of the bathrooms we inspected used dark cabinetry, wallpaper, tiling, and feature lighting to make a real statement. Again, I’m not sure how practical it is – isn’t natural light the best when you are putting on makeup?
- Built in study nooks – While it’s not something we need in our house, clearly it’s a popular feature as once again most of the homes we visited included a built in study nook.
- Colour – I’m delighted to announce that colour is finally making a comeback! Colour trends to watch: duck egg blue, blush pink and denim; spicy shades – think mustard and paprika, pared back with neutrals; and lush, dark green.
- Lots of luxurious textures – Velvet, fake fur, knitted and knobbly throws, softest leather, all just begging to be touched or stroked.
- Green grass all year round – given we are in the grip of drought once again, the best way to have a green lawn is to lay astro turf!
I’m not sure which ideas we will “pinch”, although dark jungle greens for our living areas and blush pink in our bedroom and office upstairs were already on our “wishlist”!
Which home trend most appeals to you from the list above?!
