One of the downsides of being a Middle Aged Mama, is that I seem to spend a fair proportion of my time as a taxi service.
Although Mr 19 has a licence and car, Miss 17 still needs constant chauffeurring.
And then there are the occasional phone calls from my “third child” that go something like this: “Honey I forgot my ID tag/mobile phone today, could you drop it off to me please?!” (Luckily it is only a 5 minute drive to the hubster’s workplace but still!)
I work from home, so of course I have plenty of time to run around and do errands for other family members (huh)!
Sometimes it feels like I could easily have driven to John Hughes in Perth – and back!
One thing that makes all that drive time bearable is that it is a rare opportunity to listen to my OWN choice of music.
My favourite driving playlist is made up of mostly rock (with a bit of disco thrown in for good measure!) from the 70s onwards – I don’t mind a bit of nostalgia when I’m driving – and I know all the words so can belt them out with the best of ’em!
Here are my top 10 9 in chronological order:
- September by Earth Wind and Fire (1971)
- Blame it on the Boogie by the Jackson Five (1978)
- Hold the Line by Toto (1978)
- Turn me Loose by Loverboy (1981)
- She Drives me Crazy by Fine Young Cannibals (1989)
- I’ve been Thinking about You by Londonbeat (1991)
- Missing by Everything but the Girl or Sade (Seems to be some debate about this one!)
- According to You by Orianthi (2009)
- Treasure by Bruno Mars (2013)
They are also great to listen to when I’m doing the vacuuming – I tuck my iPhone in my bra (sorry, is that TMI?!), plug in my headphones and boogie my way to a clean house!
Would any of these songs find a home onΒ your driving playlist?!

I do love soft rock from the late 70’s, but I thought I was the only one who liked Toto! My favourite band is Steely Dan. Bit sad that I can listen to it at the supermarket these days.
xx
Janet Camilleri says
No, I’m a total Toto tragic also. Nothing like the Rains Down in Africa!!!
Deb @ Home life simplified says

Janet Camilleri says
Guess it’s say to say that Mr HLS won’t be sporting a red suit anytime soon then?! LOL
Nikki@Wonderfully Women says
I tuck everything in my bra if I don’t want to loose it! ‘I have been thinking about you’ is my favourite on the list. xx N
Janet Camilleri says
Glad I’m not the only one who’s finds their bra to be a very handy hidey hole π
Kathy Marris says
Good playlist Janet. I love listening to Dakota by Stereophonics for some reason. It reminds me of summer and makes me really feel like I’m going on a holiday!
Janet Camilleri says
Kathy, I just Google it and I don’t think I’ve ever heard it before!!!

I am a chauffeur too Janet, and I like your list Janet! I’d add Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Queen) and I got You Babe, (either the original Sony and Cher or the Pretenders) … and some others – the Beatles and Stones (now that I’m thinking fav retro music π
Janet Camilleri says
Yes a bit of old school Queen might just be the next thing I add … π

Nothing better than getting into your own groove – funny how I’m just about to write a post about the messages when you hit ‘shuffle’ on your Iphone – it’s all your music but the universe picks the mix you need right then and there – boggie, motivation or distraction! I love the random messages coming together.

Love your list- I would maybe add some Robert Palmer Simply Irresistible and it would be perfect xx
Janet Camilleri says
Ooo yes! Robert Palmer FTW!
Rita @ The Crafty Expat says
Great list Janet! Love Turn me loose!

The speakers blew in our car a couple of years ago and we haven’t had the time or money to fix them. I miss the radio! At the moment we are using my phone so I get to control the tunes but Paul doesn’t mind as I have a fairly decent range of stuff from The Eagles, Cold Chisel through to Eminem (although this doesn’t get much of a play as he’s not a fan lol).
Janet Camilleri says
I’m with you on The Eagles though I find it’s more chill out music than driving tunes π
Pinky Poinker says
David Bowie, E.L.O, and other oldie stuff is on my playlist. Queen features of course π INXX and Crowded House are my fave Aussie bands.
Janet Camilleri says
Yes ELO, Queen and how could I forget INXS – Kick is the best album eva!
Lisa@RandomActsOfZen says
I love Londonbeat too! I love driving, especially with good music. You know I don’t mind a bit of Meatloaf, but reggae is definitely my favourite. x
Janet Camilleri says
When it comes to reggae, you can’t beat UB40 … but it’s more chill out music than driving tunes for me π

I really hope my kids feel comfy enough with me and hubby to do this! I lived rurally so never got to ask my parents but will SO do this for our kids, even at 3am in morning! x
