I was chatting to my lovely sister recently, and she was building me up and admiring all that I have achieved with my own business over the past three years.
What really resonated with me, was when she said something along the lines of: “You always had those skills and knowledge inside you – you just didn’t know it yet, but now they have all had a chance to come out through your business.”
Which made me think: my life is like a pinata!
Because until about 3 years ago, I was (mostly) happily going with the flow in my job, bobbing around in the breeze, like a pinata hanging off a clothes line. Sure, I got blown about by tumultous times occasionally, but I hung in there – and I wasn’t going anywhere …
And then I got whacked with the brutal blow of redundancy and I fell apart.
My life had been smashed to bits.
Who would want be a pinata?!
But what I didn’t realise then – but can now see in hindsight – is that what I saw as a brutal blow, allowed a confetti of goodies to break free in my life.
As a result, I was able to use them to create a successful business and a lifestyle that I love. (I’m one of those rare creatures that mostly loves going to work in the morning – even on Mondays! But then again my office is in my house, so no doubt that helps π .)
So what were some of the goodies that I’m talking about? Things like:
- determination;
- a thirst for learning;
- passion;
- this blog;
- new opportunities;
- valuable contacts and networks;
- a career change;
- taking a chance to pursue my dreams;
- rewarding work;
- new friends;
- freedom;
- self motivation;
- optimism;
- many valuable skills … the list goes on.
It is so much more rewarding than being stuck in a dead end job.
Now, when I put in the effort, as I follow my dreams, I really notice the difference!
So I’ve decided I’m happy with my life as a pinata after all π .
Have you ever had a point where you’ve felt that life had dealt you a brutal blow? What good things (eventually) came out of it – and you?

What an interesting way of looking at life. So many blows here lately (mainly health related) that I fear there aren’t many goodies inside left to scatter.
Janet Camilleri says
I hope that you have an avalanche of goodies come your way soon Raychael x

I think the past 5 years have been a brutal blow for me. But during that time I found blogging. I had always written online but never had my own online home.
Janet Camilleri says
Blogging is definitely one of my goodies … I hope lots more goodies come to light for you too x

I like how you explained this. I love Pinata’s we grew up making up them from scratch for Christmas each year. I associated pinata’s with fun and celebrations. You have a lot to celebrate with your success over the past three years.
Janet Camilleri says
I’ve only made one pinata – a heart for my daughter’s 6th birthday party. Alas I made it TOO well and it was really hard for the kids to break open!

Nice way to look at it – I came in thinking it was going to be more about being a whipping boy….but there you go. More surprises were hidden inside!
Janet Camilleri says
Pleasant surprises are always welcome π

Having been whacked by redundancy myself, I love the positivity that oozes from this post Janet! I haven’t quite got on top of my business yet but I’m getting there and I’ve enjoying the journey!
Janet Camilleri says
You will Kirsty! It does take a while, and gets better all the time π
Lyndall @Seize The Day Project says
Oh Janet, you make me laugh! I too have been a pinata π Isn’t it a great feeling to do your own thing and not have to answer to the party organiser any more? Well done to you π
Janet Camilleri says
And to you too Lyndall! xxx

Awesome analogy! I think we would all love to be a pinata. I fun it hard to take steps towards new things, I hate change. I really need to make changes though. Being considered ‘just a number’ is something I am not enjoying.
