My Most Unfortunate Look

Janet Camilleri · 05/02/2014 ·

So today I present for you, what I think of as my most unfortunate look.

It was 1974 – I was 7 years old, and in Grade 3. Here’s my school photo:

My Most Unfortunate Look - Grade 3 school photo

And this one below is me (apologies, it’s terribly pixellated because it’s a scan of somebody else’s photo. For some reason my Mum didn’t purchase my school photo that year!!!)

Janet Year 3 - Copy
I look miserable!

Those glasses are disgusting, and as they were to correct my lazy right eye, they had the wonderful side effect of blurring the vision in my good eye so I was clumsy and uncoordinated.

Only weeks before, my beautiful long hair had been cut off (probably for ease of maintenance) – I was devastated.

And instead of wearing the school uniform, I’m wearing a scratchy dress that I hated. My little sister and I had matching ones – except hers had pretty pink and purple flowers on it, mine was ugly brown and red.

So what photo do you think of as your most unfortunate look?!

I know, hideous aren’t they. Why couldn’t they have been pretty pink for goodness’ sake!

OMG Janet! I swear I looked like you when I was young! I had the same ugly and thick glasses except that they were for both of my eyes. I started to have an impaired vision at 6 years old and until now I can’t see without my glasses or contact lenses!

It’s funny Rita, because glasses are so cool now – Miss 17 wishes she had to wear them. What the!

I can totally relate! I had stupid chunky glasses to fix a turned eye and ridiculously ugly short hair.

What were our mothers thinking? Seriously!

I have a photo of my brother and I taken when I was about 4. I had very short hair and my brother was only a toddler and still had his cute baby curls. Over the years a lot have people have thought that I was the boy with my short hair.

Oh no! Apparently my mum used to sticky tape a bow on my (bald) head when I was a baby, so people would stop saying: “What a lovely baby! What’s HIS name?!”

I VOW next time I’m at my parents I WILL dig up a photo of me at about 9 or 10 with a boy’s haircut, think short EVERYWHERE! Just interested as to the uniform difference? (nosey journo) xx

I think the lack of uniform is because Mum forgot it was school photos day!!!!

I see an adorable young school girl xx I don’t think the dress looks too bad. You should some of the get up I had on in the 70s!

Oh Janet, we all have one of those very unflattering photos lurking in the cupboard somewhere. I think you look incredibly sweet! I also been very courageous this week and posted some very unflattering photos of my hairstyles through the decades. So I am feeling your pain!

I’m not sure whether I should be glad about that or not!
