Playing with a Black Dress

Do you like to play with your clothes sometimes?

I find myself going through my wardrobe on the cusp of each new season, bored with my current look. What should stay, and what should go? And, what can I wear differently?

Which is how I find myself playing with a black dress this week.

I picked it up from Kmart about 18 months ago, for about twenty bucks. I love it – it’s comfortable, wash and wear, and I like how it’s fitted on the slenderest part of my body – just under my boobs.

The hubster, however, is not a fan. He thinks it makes me look like an Amish woman, or a member of the Brethren. All I need is a scarf covering my hair … LOL.

I do see what he means though – on its own, it is quite severe and plain. So I came up with the following looks to see if any received his tick of approval:

Rock Chick

I had a feeling this would be the hubster’s favourite look as he has admired me in other outfits with a bit of a rock chick edge. Surprisingly though, it wasn’t.

By knotting a long draped cardy just under my bust, it draws attention to my slenderest point. This look could be quite dressy with the right jewellery and shoes.

Next, I pulled out a scarf and started experimenting with that – first of all by tying it into a kimono jacket, a trick I learned at Styled By Bec. I think it works okay, but I have to be honest, I don’t know if I would feel comfortable or confident enough to pull this look off in public – so would be interested to hear your thoughts!

Next I tried using the same scarf as a belt, tied on my hips. This was the hubster’s favourite look, though I can’t quite work out if it’s what I’m wearing – or my smouldering, come hither expression 😉 .

I’m pretty sure one of the reasons hubster is not a fan of this dress is because it hides my legs, so I hoiked it up and let it blouson over the same scarf / belt. I quite liked this look and actually ended up wearing it all day!

Which one is your favourite look? Why not have a go at playing with a black dress from your wardrobe, and see what styles you can come up with?
