Shelf Style: Kirsty from My Home Truths

This week on Shelf Style, we have something a little different.

Kirsty from My Home Truths keeps her Ikea-style shelves in their hall / entry way, and provides us with some inspiration for a great space to keep all the kids’ school and other mess needs, sorted. (If you haven’t already discovered the “I Must Confess” link up which Kirsty runs each Monday, it’s a great way to start the week!) …

1. What room are your shelves in?

My shelves are in the entry hallway. They serve a couple of purposes – mainly as a place to store the kids’ bags, shoes, hats and other school paraphernalia. But they also allow Nathan and I to store our keys, loose change and other bits and pieces. And it is the organisational hub of the home with a white board and calendar ready to keep us updated with all the happenings of the family. When it’s tidy it also serves as a colourful welcome to our busy home – when it’s untidy, well that’s a different story…

2. How long have you had them?

We got these shelves from Bunnings about a year ago. I remember I was still off work after my brain meltdown so we decided to build flat pack shelving as I was trying to recover – as you do!!! We did survive the build process (with marriage intact!) and it did give us some much needed organisation in our hallway area. It really is the perfect mix of functionality and fun for our family.

3. What do you store in the boxes/cupboards?

The bottom row of linen boxes holds shoes and hats for the kids and are coloured coded – green for Gilbert, blue for Matilda, pink for Delilah and red for Nathan and I. The next row up is for school bags, the second top shelf is for sunscreen, notes, etc and the top row is for display and for us to store our bits and bobs.

4. What is your favourite item on the shelves and why?

My favourite items are my two blue vases. One of these vases belonged to my mum (the concave vase on the left in the picture) and she gave it to me when we moved in here – it’s a beautiful vase. The second blue vase (the straighter, speckled one on the right) was a farewell gift from my old team, which I received when I accepted my redundancy in September 2014. They both have meaning for me and look totally cool too – I love them!

5. How often do you change the look of your shelves?

We haven’t changed the look much since we put it together a year ago but I do periodically clean it up each school term as it accumulates SO MUCH PAPER in a relatively short amount of time! (Perhaps Kirsty has given her shelves a bit of a change in look this week, doing her school holiday clean up?)

Thank you Kirsty, not just for sharing your #shelfstyle, but also for hosting the “I Must Confess” link up each Monday – it’s a lovely community of bloggers and one I really enjoy joining.

It’s Your Turn!

If you have a set of Ikea shelves (or another brand) in your home – why not join in the fun? I’d love to feature yours in an upcoming blog post! All you have to do is snap some pics and answer the same five questions as Kirsty has above, and email them to me at janet@middleagedmama.com.au. Oh – and you don’t have to be a blogger to join in!

How do you organise the shoes, bags, keys and other assorted paraphernalia that tends to collect in the entry of your home?

Don’t forget to enter our great comp: you could Win a Smile Brilliant teeth whitening kit (value nearly $200 AUD) – closes Monday 20 April 2015!
