Have you ever heard of the town of Split (in Croatia) before?
No, neither had I before our Mediterranean cruise 😉 .
It was our very first port of call, so will always hold a special place in our hearts.
We took a bus tour around the city, before we explored Diocletian’s Palace on foot. Built in around 300AD, it is more like a fortress than a palace; it was originally built as a very flash residence for the Emperor Diocletian and to house the Roman garrison.
Although listed as World Cultural Heritage site in 1979, the complex houses restaurants, cafes, houses, shops and apartments – with a lot of the homes still privately owned. I wonder if they ever get sick of all the tourists?!
Today, it is best known as a location from Game of Thrones series four.
But if you, like me, were clueless, let me introduce you to the wonders of this Croatian city with some of our snapshots from Split.
Okay confession time – had you ever heard of Split before?!
