The Dangers of Whitening Toothpaste

Janet Camilleri · 02/02/2015 ·

I Must Confess: I’ve never been happy with the colour of my teeth.

I’m not sure if it’s due to genetics, the antibiotics I took when I was young, or the fact that I avoided brushing them when I was a kid … drinking coffee and tea nowadays probably doesn’t help either.

Teeth desperately in need of cleaning and whitening!
Me, aged 10 – how furry and yellow do my teeth look?!

So when I saw a “you-beaut (translation: expensive!) whitening toothpaste” on special recently – different to my usual brand – I decided to give it a whirl.

It has to be said, the jury is out as to whether any whitening toothpastes work. However I’m grateful for even the slightest improvement in my not-so-pearly-whites. I’m a smiley person after all, so my teeth are often on display!

And then … I got a stinging sensation in the corner of my mouth. Uh oh! Could it be my first cold sore?

As the days passed, the sensation continued and seemed to spread … and then I noticed a  rash around my mouth.

skin rash caused by whitening toothpaste

What was that about?!

It took me a few days before I twigged what the culprit was – there it was, staring me in the face each time I brushed my teeth …

Things get a bit messy when I’m brushing my teeth; I tend to get toothpaste foam everywhere (please tell me I’m not the only one!). I’m probably sub-consciously trying to make up for those years of neglect, so get a bit over-enthusiastic about my oral hygiene these days.

But obviously, the whitening ingredient/s in the toothpaste don’t agree with my skin. Whitening toothpaste is dangerous to delicate skin – who knew?!

I haven’t quit whitening toothpaste altogether, instead I’m just a lot more careful when I brush, to not get foam on my skin.

Have you discovered the dangers of whitening toothpaste – and do you think it really works?!

Oh Janet your picture made me laugh, I had to click on it. No I have never had a problem with teeth whitening but I image it would be pretty strong ingredients.

LOL do you know how hard it is to take a selfie when you are brushing your teeth?!

I would love to have whiter and brighter teeth. I tried the mouthguard whitening system, which cost a small fortune but didn’t notice any real difference. If I didn’t have such a fear of the dentist, I would look into professional whitening.

Miss 18 had the dentist treatment and it worked a treat – but like you, I am a great big scaredy cat when it comes to dentists …

Janet you look like my 8yr old brushing your teeth… lol. I must admit white teeth do look good but not worth a rash.

Never knew that! I haven’t got on that bandwagon yet, I’m on the sensitive tooth stuff right now!

My teeth are horrid and as a result I am a little over zealous with Mr 5’s teeth lol! I’m not sold on the whole teeth whitening toothpaste but I don’t have sensitive skin so haven’t had a reaction thankfully. I hope the rash isn’t too painful!

Lol, that photo is hilarious! I not only get it all over my face but it drips down the toothbrush onto my hand when I’m really doing a good brush! LOL! I don’t have white teeth at all and figure that I’m just one of those people that don’t. I remember asking my dentist if red wine discolours teeth and he said no, so I’m safe!

I am such a messy teethbrusher – even worse than you Janet! I have a similar background. Didn’t brush much when I was younger so I do feel compelled to brush more now to make up for it. I’d be interested to see if the whitening toothpaste does bring about a result for you.

I’d love to get my teeth whitened too! Every time I go to the dentist they tell me I have great teeth. I’d be happy with a few shades whiter though. Hope that rash goes. X
