I want you to stop and think about your looks for a moment: what are your best features?
If you are having trouble thinking of any, you are not alone. As women, we find it all to easy to identify the things that we DON’T like about our bodies – whether it’s cellulite, a big nose, or whatever.
Yet the first advice you will hear is that you should emphasise your best features – but how can you do that if you don’t even know what they are?
It’s time we stopping dwelling on the negative, the things our eyes zoom in on with distaste as soon as we see ourselves in a mirror, and instead, focus on the positive.
If you are really struggling to identify your best features, here’s some Middle Aged Mama advice for you:
Your best features are usually the ones you take for granted.
Up until recently, if you’d asked me what my best features were, I probably would have mentioned my eyes, my smile, or my legs.
But apparently, I also have lovely shoulders! Who knew?!
I’d never really thought about or looked at my shoulders before, let alone appreciated them!
It all came about when a friend was complaining that she had round sloping shoulders, and how she couldn’t wear the off the shoulder or cold shoulder tops so popular this summer. She was envious of my shoulders – of all things!
I learned two important lessons from this:
- Only because she mentioned it, I *did* look at her shoulders and saw something I’d never noticed about her appearance before. She might have disliked her shoulders, but nobody else notices;
- She was right – I do have nicely shaped shoulders which from now on I will remember, and feel proud to show off!
So today, look in the mirror at yourself and instead of zooming in on the things you don’t like, take another look at the bits you normally don’t pay any attention to. Chances are, you are taking your best features, completely for granted!
