I’ve had a look at the fashion forecast for Spring/Summer, and it’s going to be hot, hot, hot.
(Or maybe that’s just me with my middle aged thermostat?!)
Seriously though, I’ve been researching the trends predicted to gain momentum in the coming Spring and Summer, and mostly – I’ve liked what I’ve seen.
It’s a Yes From Me!
I’m looking forward to embracing some trends, such as:
- Bright tropicana-inspired fabrics. Think hot pink, bold florals, and palm leaf prints.
Bell sleeve top in hot pink from Katies
- Paisley prints. Mind you, does paisley ever really go out of style?
- Long pendants. You mean they weren’t “in” before?! Seems I never got the memo coz I’ve been wearing them for a couple of years now!
However there are some trends that I’m not so keen on …
What I Won’t Be Wearing
My “give it a miss” list includes:
- Anything off the shoulder – even though I love the look. I did give it a try last spring/summer, but found it uncomfortable and impractical. Plus it requires a strapless bra!
Off the shoulder embroidered dress from Millers
- One shoulder. Maybe it’s my OCD tendencies, but I’ve never really liked this look.
- All white. Wearing all white is just a disaster waiting to happen as far as I’m concerned!
- Gingham. It reminds me too much of my old school uniform …
- Jumpsuits. I like them BUT … My family gave me a nickname when I was little, and it has stuck to this day: Jolly Juicy Janet. In other words, I am famous for needing the loo frequently – so there will be no jumpsuits for me.
- Flounced and tiered skirts. The long ones do my apple shaped figure absolutely NO favours, and while I happily wore the shorter ones in the 80’s, that was 30 years ago and I don’t think it’s something I will be wearing now I’m a middle aged mama.
Actually, I’ve heard that 80’s style will be huge this upcoming spring and summer – from shoulder pads, to puff sleeves, taffeta, frills and flounces. Not sure I’m ready to trot down that path once again … how about you?!
Which trends or styles will you be avoiding this coming Spring/Summer?!
Linking up with:
I recently saw the video clip for locomotion by Kylie Minogue and had a hankering for a ra-ra skirt. If I could find one I would probably buy it. But mostly I am not going back to the 80’s. 😉
LOL yes I used to rock a rara skirt back in the day. Now I’m wondering if perms will be back too …
I’m with you on the off the shoulder, I am sure I would spend all my time adjusting it, but I do have a hankering for a touch of gingham, maybe a scarf. I fondly remember a black and white gingham cookie dress from my childhood 😉
Maryann from Gilligan’s Island could rock a gingham dress!
Agree with OTS. I’m just a bit over it. Loving the gingham tho.
Yeah it was fun for about five seconds last summer, can’t believe we’re stuck with it for another year.
I’m a yes for the shirt dress and the bell sleeves but a big no for the off the shoulder look. I just find that style too annoying. If we are going back to the eighties I certainly hope perms aren’t making a comeback too. How awful!
Helen I was just thinking that myself, I wonder if this means perms are coming back!
I’m with you, no off the shoulder I afraid I will be constantly tugging at it.
As soon as I move it slips up, I know there are tricks and tips to try, but meh …
My ‘give it a miss’ list is similar to yours.
Thanks for sharing some great ideas for the warmer months. Need to start planning.

It’s already well on the way here in Brissie – winter – what’s that!
I don’t own any strapless bras so anything off the shoulder is really just too hard for me. I haven’t worn a strapless bra since the 1980s I suspect so they’re probably more comfortable now but still…. I have bad memories of them! #teamlovinlife
I’ll let you in on a secret Deb – I wore a regular bra to my recent awards night gala, with an off the shoulder dress. The strapless bra just didn’t sit right. So I put my normal one on and just took the straps off!
Ok, I’m agreeing with you on all of these. I hate the mono boob look I get from a strapless bra & as for white? Yeah, it rarely stays that colour on me…
LOL I really don’t like wearing strapless bras and often just ditch a bra altogether if I’m at home …
Yes Yes and Yes! Off the shoulder is a no no for me too. I’m always scrabbling to pull them up in unwitting moments! I don’t like spaghetti straps either. I do like white cut off capri pants for summer though.
Yes I like capri pants and white ones do look cool and crisp … shame they don’t stay that way long on me!
Love the belle sleeves and the paisley prints. Agree with the off the shoulder thing. LOVE the look but most of the time I found they wouldn’t stay off the shoulder for me and kept slipping up and driving me crazy. Also the strapless bra need is so annoying. #TeamLovinLife
I just can’t go past a pretty paisley print x
I’m not a big fan of the whole cold shoulder thing, or anything that needs hitching up. Glad to know that my pendant necklaces are fashionable (like you, I never knew they weren’t!) My grandbaby loves the ones I wear. I’m a huge fan of capri pants and I’ll be wearing some coloured tops with them this Summer – but probably not the belled sleeves – not really my thing either.
Yeah I don’t really like bell sleeves either, apart from anything I get too hot to wear long sleeves 95% of the time.
I’m with you Janet and we appear to have the same style. I don’t want to dress in something that I’m not comfortable in because it really shows. I’m not an off the shoulder fan and although I like Millers dress I’d prefer it with shoulders. I like to wear lots of colour in Spring and Summer or anytime really.
Millers seems to have a LOT of OTS and cold shoulder in store at the moment, I love this dress but it would drive me nuts!
NO, NO, NO SHOULDER PADS!!!! But I do love that shirt dress.
I bought two sleeveless shirt dresses at Rivers last week, can’t wait til it’s warm enough to wear them!
Thanks for the fashion preview. I love all of what you have presented here. Except I’m a big fan of OTS or even cold shoulder. I have heaps of tops and dresses that are this style and I love them. But you do have to wear what is comfortable and right for you. #TeamLovinLife
You do look lovely in OTS and cold shoulder Kathy. I wanted to rock it as I’ve been told I have nice shoulders, but it’s just not comfy for me.
I hate any kind of frill on shirts – sleeves, necks, anywhere! No to the bells for me!
Yeah I’m not a fan either Ness!
Being a G cup off the shoulder is not an option for me, its hard enough finding a comfortable strapped bra to wear. So, I don’t want to even think about strapless. I’ve been there done that with the shoulder pad thing, and am not going there again. These days I prefer my clothes a little less structured, with comfort at the top of the list.
I’m only a D cup Jenni and I know what you mean, I hate thin straps on bras, they really cut into me.
Thanks for the preview Janet! Katies have some pretty tops. I also haven’t had an off-the-shoulder anything since the 80s. I agree with all your readers – I’ve gone a bit beyond that look, not because of the bra issue which I can easily go without, but because I’m usually too cold around the neck and shoulders.
Jo I love doing a bit of fashion research, and it’s fun to share it with others!
I love gingham. And this week I got a red gingham dress in the mail from ASOS and I thought of you when I got it because you said you wore red gingham at school. Now you know who I will be thinking of when I wear it. 😉
LOL I’m sure it’s much prettier than my old school uniform – and I bet you don’t wear bloomers underneath!!!
Hi Janet ? new subbie here. Found you on IG and looking forward to following along.
I agree, I don’t do the one shoulder look. I have never been keen on the asymmetrical look. Give me a maxi dress in Summer and I am happy…not keen on legs ?
Welcome Deidre – it’s lovely to have you here. I couldn’t find you on Instagram though?
P.S. Please excuse ? in my first comment…I put smilie faces in …they don’t work…silly me!! :/
That’s okay, I run into those sorts of problems too!
