When You Can’t Be There …

Janet Camilleri · 31/08/2015 ·

NB This is a sponsored post.

There is nothing worse than hearing bad news from friends or family, and being too far away to do anything about it.

When you can't be there
When your nephew is hospitalised; when you learn that your friend has just lost her mother; or perhaps a loved one is made redundant; it just makes you feel so helpless.

It’s even worse if they are in another city, state or even overseas! You want to do something to help lift their spirits, to let them know that you are thinking of them. The solution? When you can’t be there, flowers can.

There have been several times in recent years, when I have truly appreciated a gift of flowers from somebody far away.

Cuddles

When I was in hospital for surgery, I received flowers AND a teddy – like this one. Yes, I know they’re meant for new babies but when have I ever paid any attention to the rules?! Besides, anybody that knows me, knows how much I believe in the power of a daily dose of cute! So what could be more perfect than a little friend to cuddle – and a bright posy – when you’re stuck in a hospital bed and feeling poorly?

I also received a posy like this one below, which I loved – especially the fact that it comes in its own little bucket. No need to trouble the nurses to find a vase 🙂 . I’m still using the metal bucket as a pencil holder on my desk!

Pink Pop

Or in the case of your nephew in hospital, this fireman arrangement is sure to bring a smile to his face – regardless of whether he’s a little boy or a big boy! Who says boys can’t enjoy flowers?!

Fireman Sam

It’s always hard to know what to do, when a friend is grieving. I shared some ideas in my post “What to do for a friend who is grieving“, which I wrote based on my own experience after I lost my mother. The flowers that arrived, were a balm for my soul.

When it comes to death, many people are scared of saying or doing the wrong thing, or causing more hurt and pain, so they shy away – and do nothing. Sadly, I think that hurts even more. Believe me, they’d rather know that you care, and that their grief matters.

I also received flowers when my position was made redundant in 2012. My spirits were so low – anything bright and sunny to look at, definitely helped!

The folk at Fresh Flowers specialise in delivering smiles flowers and gifts, to most capital cities, territories, metropolitan and regional areas across Australia. I’m impressed by the fact they offer same day flower delivery in Brisbane if you order by 2pm on a weekday.

Little Miss Sunshine
So next time you hear some bad news about a loved one far away, remember:

When you can’t be there … flowers can.

There is something nice about getting something from someone far away – even just a letter or note in the post….

I agree, there’s nothing nicer than a bunch of flowers to make you feel special and loved.

It’s really been ages since I’ve sent or received flowers. Must start making hints to Mickey Blue Eyes for our upcoming 20th anniversary! You’re right, they really do brighten up your day. xo

We just received word that my mother-in-law broke both her ankles on an overseas cruise and is being flown home today. I think she might need more than flowers but as we are on the other side of the country, flowers it is.

I have a couple of those metal buckets we use as pencil holders too 🙂 This post made me realise I haven’t had fresh flowers in the house since Mothers Day. I really should buy them more often.
