Your Favourite Fashion Eras

Janet Camilleri · 27/09/2017 ·

Not long ago I posed the question here and on Facebook: what are your favourite fashion eras?

favourite fashion eras

When I was a little girl, I thought Victorian crinolines were the most beautiful, romantic gowns ever, and spent many happy hours drawing and designing my own versions (usually for paper dolls).

The shine came off somewhat when I realised that wearing them was nothing short of torture, due to the heavily boned and laced corsets they required!

So I ended up deciding my favourite fashion era was either the 1920’s and the 1950’s, even though they are quite different.

But I was curious to know what others thought, and the results are now in  …

3rd Runner Up: Let’s Hear it for the 80’s!

Ah the 80’s … when your hair gave you status. The bigger it was, the cooler you were (didn’t matter if you were male or female!).

I’m told the 80’s are indeed making a comeback, and I have definitely noticed the odd shoulder pad, neon monstrosity outfit, and drop waist dress, sneaking back into the pages of fashion magazines.

Spotted in an antique store: a jacket I owned in the 80s!

Vanessa from Normal Ness mentioned her love for all the colours from that era. It certainly was a colourful time – I think I remember my favourite combo back in the day was purple and jade green (you can check out some of my 80’s outfits in this post).

The fact that you can still pick up an 80’s original at the op shop, may also mean that it is more accessible to women even today …

2nd Runner Up: In a Flap Over 20’s Style

There were quite a few votes for 1920’s style, and Coco Chanel specifically. It seems many of us agree with Leanne from Cresting the Hill: “The 1920’s beaded flapper dresses – [are] just so gorgeous!”

Runner Up: Frugal 40’s Fashion

As Deborah explained:

“I personally loved the fashion of the forties. Clothes were very well made, and lasted. And they had to last, given it was the war era. People mended and made do, and came up with some wonderful makeovers of clothing where various parts of an item showed wear … I like that clothes were made from natural fibres like wool and cottons during that era. Beautifully tailored, and I do love me a good cardigan! I’ve been known to binge watch the old TV series the Sullivans and Dr Blake to get a fashion fix.”

And 1st Place goes to: the 1950s!

It seems we love classic 50’s fashion, the winner by a landslide.

The main reasons? The glamour, the full skirts and petticoats, and the realisation that they are flattering to pretty much any body shape!

Whether you call it retro, vintage, rockabilly, or pinup style – the 1950s are officially your favourite fashion era!

I still love the 20’s – but I don’t have your figure or I’d probably be voting for the 40’s too 🙂
