10 Things NOT to do on a Wet Weekend

Janet Camilleri · 09/04/2021 · 22 Comments

Has anybody else noticed that these days we seem to get “severe weather events” or even “rain bombs” instead of boring old rain?!

Everything has to be so extreme!

10 things NOT to do on a wet weekend

Here in south east Queensland, we’ve had an incredible amount of rain over the past few weeks. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane had over 300mm (nearly 12 inches) of rain during March, and it also bucketed down over Easter (last weekend).

I lost count of the number of Facebook posts advising what to do when stuck inside on a rainy day … and well, meย being me, I just had to go against the flow (see what I did there) and tell you 10 things NOT to do on a wet weekend:

  1. Mow the Lawn. Okay, you can do it if you really want, but don’t blame me if you end up wet, cold, and miserable; the catcher doesn’t work, leaving clumps of grass clippings everywhere; or the mower conks out because it doesn’t like water in the engine.
  2. Washing. Unless you have a dryer and don’t mind paying a fortune to run it.
  3. Move House. I Must Confess: we were actually meant to help somebody shift on Saturday. Luckily the weather cleared on Sunday ย …
  4. Hold a BBQ or (perish the thought) Children’s Birthday Party. Unless you enjoy losing your sanity!
  5. Use a Hair Straightener. Because with all that humidity in the air, it would just be a waste of time.
  6. Work on your Tan. Actually, don’t do this in ANY weather. Because, you know, skin cancer …
  7. Bake a Pavlova. Not that I ever have, but I’m told that meringue doesn’t work very well in wet weather.
  8. Compete in a Marathon. Though why anybody would want to do this in ANY weather is a bit of a mystery to me.
  9. Wear Suede Anything. Shoes, bag, jacket – it’ll just get ruined.
  10. And Finally, don’t forget your brolly if you DO have to go out in the rain!

Instead, I suggest staying at home and having a nap, or curling up with a good book, a movie, or your iPad – with a cuppa, and a furry critter to keep you company.

You’re welcome ๐Ÿ˜‰ .

Too true…all of it. I am sure the weather gods wait for house moving days. We have moved in both rain and extreme heat. I recommend neither. House moving is hard enough!

Fortunately there was no rush. We did the move yesterday after the rain had moved on.

I tell you what, looking after somebody else’s three dogs in the extreme rain (and it’s ice rain down here in Canberraville) is no picnic. You can’ t leave them out in it, and when they’re in they bring their mud with them. Apparently dogs still need to pee and poop even when it’s raining, but they refuse to go out and do it, so you have to coax them outside and then be prepared for all that mud and wet dog stink when they come back in. Or if they’re little dogs they think think that no one will notice if they pee inside. I noticed!!! I’m not loving it …
    It finally stopped today. Relief!

Yes, wet weather is definitely one occasion when I am VERY glad that Miss Fleur is an indoors only cat. No more muddy pawprints!

Really should do something about that one day … I love them, but hubster doesn’t, so I would be the only one eating it and I figure I have enough sugar in my life!

I did laps up and down the firestairs as I needed to get some bad vibes out. I might even do it again today. I kind of like the kookiness of it.

I must remember tip no 5. You can guarantee the minute I straighten my hair for an event (or pay to have it done) it will rain. Every. Single. Time.

Miss 19 tells me that straightening your hair is so last year … so you don’t have to worry about doing it anymore! I still use mine occasionally to add a bit of wave, rather than straighten!

I can’t imagine anyone trying to do these things in the wild weather we’re having but you never know. There is always that one person. I’ll never forget being in Cairns years ago during a cyclone and people were out surfing! Crazy!

Also don’t get married {although it can’t really be helped}. My brother got married in the 2011 floods and couldn’t go on his honeymoon because the roads were all out.

Look at that warm happy puss! We could all learn lessons from cats about what to do when it’s rainy.

I think we could all learn lessons from cats full stop. Like taking time to soak up the sun and having 50 nanna naps a day. Sounds like a great life to me!

Vanessa: when I was working fulltime and had no inside hanging space, I did too! These days I have clothes lines in the cat patio so can dry clothes without worrying they’ll get rained on ๐Ÿ™‚
