5 Style Tips for Apple Shapes: Sonia Kruger

Janet Camilleri · 03/10/2014 ·

I’ve been trying to find celebrities with apple shapes, for a bit of fash-spiration, but they are not easy to find! Then along came Sonia Kruger …

Of course, Sonia doesn’t normally have an apple shape – but now she is expecting her first baby! I’ve loved watching her style over the last few weeks, as she’s developed the pot belly typical of the first 20 weeks of pregnancy – or any non-pregnant apple shape (like me).

Sonia is absolutely glowing, and her outfits have been a lot more hit than miss of late. So what fashion tips can we apple shapes glean from her fashion choices?

1. A Well Placed Peplum or Fabric Fold

Never underestimate the power of a well placed peplum, or fabric fold, to disguise a tummy bulge. Note I said “well placed”; the outfit needs to be fitted at just the right point before the peplum or fold – usually on the narrowest point between the bust and the waist.

Here’s Sonia rocking a peplum or two, and dresses that folded and draped beautifully over her bump.

2. Black Hides the Lumps and Bumps

There’s a reason black is so popular – it really does hide a multitude of sins. Although you can’t really see it in this pic, trust me, the white one really emphasised the bulge, while the black disguised it beautifully. Sonia wore these outfits only a day or two apart so it really was all down to the dress.

3. Stretch Fabrics Rule

Forget linens and other stiff fabrics that crease, only drawing attention to the tummy region. Stretch fabrics that gently skim – not cling – are much more flattering. It’s hard to say for certain, but these dresses below look like they are made of stretch fabrics.

4. The Power of Print

Like black garments, prints can hide a tummy – and attract the eye to the print, rather than the shape beneath.

5. Vertical Stripes

Vertical stripes and  stretch fabric – it’s a winner in my book! I tried really hard to get a decent pic of the dress Sonia wore on Mornings on 25 September, but by the time I picked up my phone to snap a photo she was sitting behind a desk. Here’s my pic …

The experts always say that apple shapes need to create the illusion of a waistline by wearing clothing that nips in at the waist (so peplums would be great for this) or by wearing a belt. The key is finding good tailored clothing that fits well, no matter what your shape is.
P.S: I like Sonia Kruger but I can’t stand ‘Big Brother’ so I haven’t seen her lately. She should have stuck with ‘Dancing With The Stars’, then I would see her!

I like those dresses with the black half moons at the waist too. Not that I own one. Since the ‘meno’ I’ve lost any waist I had and am now a full on Granny Smith. These are great tips Janet x

I think peplums are great for hiding tums – thanks for the reminder. I often go out to shop and come back with something that needs to go straight back to the shop because I’ve held my tummy in when trying the clothes on in the changing room! A peplum will hid all manner of sins – note Jo! I think stretchy fabrics can work for and against you – some fabrics make lumps and bumps worse, but others do skim over them. The style that always works for me though is a cross-over dress in a stretch fabric.

I’m not preg but I could really use these ideas. Thanks for the tips Janet. Absolutely gorgeous, I can’t even see the bump at all.
