5 Style Tips for Apple Shapes: Sonia Kruger

I’ve been trying to find celebrities with apple shapes, for a bit of fash-spiration, but they are not easy to find! Then along came Sonia Kruger …

Of course, Sonia doesn’t normally have an apple shape – but now she is expecting her first baby! I’ve loved watching her style over the last few weeks, as she’s developed the pot belly typical of the first 20 weeks of pregnancy – or any non-pregnant apple shape (like me).

Sonia is absolutely glowing, and her outfits have been a lot more hit than miss of late. So what fashion tips can we apple shapes glean from her fashion choices?

1. A Well Placed Peplum or Fabric Fold

Never underestimate the power of a well placed peplum, or fabric fold, to disguise a tummy bulge. Note I said “well placed”; the outfit needs to be fitted at just the right point before the peplum or fold – usually on the narrowest point between the bust and the waist.

Here’s Sonia rocking a peplum or two, and dresses that folded and draped beautifully over her bump.

2. Black Hides the Lumps and Bumps

There’s a reason black is so popular – it really does hide a multitude of sins. Although you can’t really see it in this pic, trust me, the white one really emphasised the bulge, while the black disguised it beautifully. Sonia wore these outfits only a day or two apart so it really was all down to the dress.

3. Stretch Fabrics Rule

Forget linens and other stiff fabrics that crease, only drawing attention to the tummy region. Stretch fabrics that gently skim – not cling – are much more flattering. It’s hard to say for certain, but these dresses below look like they are made of stretch fabrics.

4. The Power of Print

Like black garments, prints can hide a tummy – and attract the eye to the print, rather than the shape beneath.

5. Vertical Stripes

Vertical stripes and  stretch fabric – it’s a winner in my book! I tried really hard to get a decent pic of the dress Sonia wore on Mornings on 25 September, but by the time I picked up my phone to snap a photo she was sitting behind a desk. Here’s my pic …

What is your best style tip for dressing an apple shape? And have you been watching Sonia’s style for a growing bump with as much fascination as I have?!
