There is nothing like a gift of flowers to lift the spirit, or to let somebody know you are thinking of them.
In the past couple of years I’ve started growing miniature roses, which to my astonishment have flourished. I nearly always have at least one in a vase on my kitchen counter!
In fact, my roses are so prolific I’ve started cutting the freshest blooms, placing the stems in soaked tissues or paper towel, and tenderly wrapping them with alfoil, so I can give them away. (Does anybody else remember giving their teacher a bunch like this from their own garden?!) It’s such a small thing, and yet I love seeing the recipient’s face light up at the absolute unexpectedness of it!
Hence my thoughts that the world would be a much better place, if we gave more flowers.
Not sure when to give flowers, or why? They’re suitable for almost any occasion!

If you don’t have any flowers in your garden, or you live some distance from the person you are giving to, it couldn’t be easier these days to order online from companies like Flowers for Everyone, Fresh Flowers, Interflora, or Petals.
And why am I such an advocate of giving flowers? Yes, it cheers up someone else, but it’s not just the recipients that benefit! As the old saying goes, it is more blessed to give than to receive …
Is there any occasion that you know when to give flowers is a MUST?
Sammie @ The Annoyed Thyroid says
What gorgeous roses! Your fingers must be so green! I think you can always say it with flowers!
Janet Camilleri says
Believe me I don’t have a green thumb at all, so nobody was more surprised than me when they flourished!
Liz (Good Things) says
Such pretty roses! I don’t need a reason to give flowers. : )
Janet Camilleri says
And that’s the best reason of all π
HUgzilla says
Oh wow, I always thought that roses didn’t flower much!! I love springtime here – my garden has a lot of flowering plants and I have vases all over the house with blooms. It instantly lifts the house!
Janet Camilleri says
I don’t know about regular roses but I am loving the miniature ones!
Min@WriteoftheMiddle says
What pretty roses you’re growing Janet! I used to have roses at my last house. Boo hoo – I miss them. I also miss a particular Camellia bush that flowered prolifically and was just so beautiful! The last time I received flowers was um …. probably when I bought some for myself!!
Janet Camilleri says
Min, I think you need to plant some roses at your new place, stat!
EssentiallyJess says
We should give more flowers. What a great reason to start growing them.
Janet Camilleri says
Could be the answer to world peace π
JF Gibson says
Your roses are just beautiful. I’m not a big flower giver, or receiver but I love gardens and appreciate the hard work and beauty that they give. But, I also have a black thumb. π
Janet Camilleri says
I thought I was the same Jodi so it was a real shock to realise I could grow roses (albeit miniature ones)!
Renee Wilson says
How lovely, Janet. It really is so special when you’re given flowers from someone’s garden. The paper towel and tin foil add to the special-ness (that’s totally a word right – I’m so TIRED π )
Janet Camilleri says
Hmmm I should be sending YOU flowers right now Renee, your last day at work for six whole months! π
Cathy@lifethroughthehaze says
Flowers are the best pick me up ever! I don’t care if they are hand picked from someone’s garden or beautiful arrangements from florists all flowers are beautiful!
Janet Camilleri says
They always bring a smile to my face, even if it’s some random person walking down the street with a bunch for somebody else!
Tegan says
Mr 6 picks me flowers all of the time and I love it. He also takes flowers to a girl in his class which is a little bit cute.
Janet Camilleri says
OMG that is a LOT cute Tegan! I hope he never grows out of it!
Toni {Finding Myself Young} says
It seems Trent thinks the only reason to give flowers is valentines day because that’s the only time I’ve ever received them {despite having his baby which you think would warrant flowers}. He also likes to give me the $10 supermarket or petrol station type of flowers, sigh, one day I’ll train him properly! Perhaps I should send him this post π
Janet Camilleri says
Gotta educate these blokes somehow π
