I’ve wanted to update our master bedroom suite for ages, and have gazed longingly at catalogues featuring white furniture, velvet headboards, and the like.
But … it just hasn’t happened yet (for several reasons, all too boring to go into here).
Our current furniture felt too dark and heavy, especially after I bought some beautiful new bed linen in my favourite aqua and teal colours.
Then I realised that what I was really pining for, was a fabric bedhead. Maybe there was a way that I could do a bit of budget DIY in the meantime?
Next time I was out shopping, I tried to find a suitable fabric. I had my heart set on a taupe velvet headboard; alas, when I looked in store it seemed there was every colour of the rainbow, except the one that I wanted. Could something else work?
My No-Sew Velvet Headboard Cover
Eventually I settled on teal, and paid the princely sum of $12 for the required amount of material for my project. I was worried it would be too bright, but now I think it pulls everything together nicely, and taupe would have been too dull!
The best thing (apart from the low price)? Crushed velvet is a stretch fabric, which means it’s very forgiving AND it doesn’t fray – no sewing required – hooray!
I managed to fashion my new velvet headboard with less than 2 metres of fabric, and half a dozen safety pins.
You might also notice that we got some new lamps as well – a few months ago now – for only $20 each – another bargain!
I’m feeling pretty chuffed with my budget solution to my decorating problem, it really does make our room feel more like a boudoir – just in time for when I had my glamour photos done recently!
And should I get sick of it … or finally get that new bedroom suite, I can turn the fabric into cushions or a kitty blankie (I’m sure Miss Fleur will approve)!
Do you have a velvet headboard? What was your last decorating project?!

I’ve heard velvet is very “in” this winter – so my bedroom is now bang on trend!
Kirsty @ My Home Truths says
That’s a great idea Janet. I’m in a similar position with my bedroom, except our headboard is white. I could easily drape that in a coloured velvet too, plus it would be easy to change the whole colour scheme for a new season!
Janet Camilleri says
You should do it Kirsty – would love to see the results!

You did that?! Huh!!! Well that’s just bloody cool . Seriously looks great.

You clever woman. I love the idea of a fabric bedhead but worry about them getting grubby with body and hair oils (sorry not trying to be gross, just realistic). Your idea is a perfect solution given you can take it off and wash it or as you say pass it on to the cat and easily change up your colour scheme. Nice work Janet.
Janet Camilleri says
Too true … I was also worried that Miss Fleur would claw it … because this only cost $12 it really wouldn’t matter if she did take a liking to it!

Janet Camilleri says
LOL yes that would definitely help 😉

Love it Janet. I love a bit of DIY on a budget. I really want a fabric headboard for the bed, but we also need a new mattress and I’m wondering do up upsize to king size or queen and if we do upsize do we go the fabric headboard. It becomes a costly exercise once you consider all the linen that needs to be purchased….
