If you are middle aged, you will probably remember when phones looked like this:
and when telephone numbers only had 6 digits (do you still remember yours?!)
You probably also remember wearing short dresses, bobbles in your hair, and knee high socks, like in these photos:
And Now for the Quiz …
If you grew up in Australia, you should also have no problems answering most – if not all – of these questions:
- What could you buy at a shop called Arpel?
- Commonly used in classrooms, what do the letters “OHP” stand for?
- What were stores like Jack the Slasher and Mark-it famous for?
- What sort of business was TAA in?
- Complete this sentence: “Football, meat pies, kangaroos and … “
- Royal Crown sold what flavour of soft drink?
- What do the letters “PMG” stand for?
- What colour icing would you find on an Arnott’s coffee scroll?
- What would you buy from Golden Fleece?
- A character called Norm starred in a series of TV ads. What was the four word slogan?
Ah, the joys of growing up in Australia in the 70’s. How did you go – did you find it difficult, or did this quick quiz bring back lots of memories for you?
Quiz Answers:
- Arpel was a women’s fashion chain – like Katies or Sussan – back in the day. I remember browsing through it when I first became fashion conscious at the end of the 1970s.
- Overhead projector.
- They were warehouse style discount supermarkets, where customers had to use a Nikko pen to write prices on products themselves (hence the name Mark-it).
- TAA was an airline – Trans Australian Airlines. It was re-branded as Australian Airlines in 1986, before being absorbed by Qantas in the early 1990s.
- Holden cars – it was the jingle from a TV ad for Holden in the 70s. I remember it being the height of fashion for girls to wear short denim skirts with the words embroidered on them in colourful thread, in the mid 70’s.
- Cola. Apparently the company still exists but I haven’t seen it in Australia for a very long time – we used to be able to get it from the school tuckshop in the early 70’s (clearly before the Smart Choices guidelines were introduced to Queensland tuckshops!)
- Post Master General’s Department – in the days before Telecom, Telstra and Australia Post, it was known as the PMG. You can still find the occasional pit cover with “PMG” engraved in it.
- Pink.
- Petrol – Golden Fleece was a chain of service stations.
- Life. Be in it.
If you got all ten quiz questions right – congratulations – you are definitely middle aged (or older)!
If you didn’t – you are just a spring chicken or before you get too excited, you clearly didn’t grow up in Australia 😉 .
What was your score – and are you willing to tell me how old you are?!
Kathy Marris says
I was actually stumped on a couple of these. The name Arpel and Royal Crown meant nothing to me and I couldn’t remember the colour of the icing on Arnotts Coffee Scrolls. But I am definitely a 60s and 70s girl!
Janet Camilleri says
Where did you grow up Kathy? Maybe these brands weren’t available outside of Queensland (where I grew up).
