In 23 years of marriage, our bedroom has undergone many transformations, even though the furniture has mostly stayed the same.
Here I am as a newlywed, posing in our newly decorated bedroom. Oh how I loved that quilt set, and the matching apricot drapes and rug. It was the bedroom of my dreams! Luckily the hubster liked the quilt set and didn’t mind that it was pretty feminine.
Our next bedroom was in the house that we had designed and built. By this stage we were both in love with mint green and decorated the whole house accordingly – BEFORE it became fashionable. We were quite put out when it became the trend, and suddenly it was EVERYWHERE! Once again, hubster didn’t seem to mind having girly flowers crawling all over him in bed π
Our next house was a tiny little worker’s cottage, which we bought for three reasons: location, location, LOCATION! It was a beautiful big block in the prestigious and leafy Oyster Point part of Cleveland, and backed on to the water. We would launch the tinny from our own backyard at high tide, and caught mud crabs down the back! The house was so tiny that my study was in our bedroom – you can’t see it in this photo but my desk, computer and chair are literally at the foot of the bed.
I loved the aqua colour we painted the whole house with, and the milky coffee coloured trim. The bedspread in this photo is particularly special to me. I bought it with my first ever paycheck from selling an article to a magazine! The colours are still feminine but at least it isn’t floral this time!
At the end of 2009 we realised we needed to move into bigger digs. Both our kids were now teenagers! Just after we moved in I spotted this gorgeous bedding package on special for just under $100 so I brought it home with me.
Today, we still have that same quilt – but as you can see in the photo below, it’s reversible, so in Summer I like to use the lighter side. And we have FINALLY bought a new bed. You may have guessed by now I do love me a bargain. We found the gorgeous sleigh bed (mattress not included) at our local Salvo’s Store, for the princely sum of $85!
I still love this quilt but I’m thinking a light coffee coloured feature wall behind the bed might be the next update …
How about you? Do you update your bedroom’s look regularly or has it been the same since the year dot?

Having moved 22 times, I’m kind of liking just being in the one bedroom for an extended period of time. Having said that though every six months or so if we haven’t moved I tend to move furniture or change quilt covers. lol
Janet says
Wow – 22 times! Oh well they say a change is as good as a holiday …

I would love to update my room but I’m afraid its the room that tends to be forgotten. The horrible pile of dust on my dresser at the moment is testament to that! I am coveting a new quilt cover at the moment but I’m yet to find one that inspires.
Janet says
And isn’t it always the way that you find one when you can’t afford it – and when you do have money, there’s nothing that appeals? π
Cathy says
Love the bedroom evolution photos – thanks for linking up! I particularly like the posing in the first two photos! Those two pics look like they have come straight out of a catalogue. I do tend to keep my bedspreads for a while, although I think I have had different in each house we have lived in. Might have to look at this for a theme for own flashback one day π
Janet says
I know I was quite surprised by my “bedroom evolution” Cathy – have fun!
Min says
Wow Janet – this post really takes me back – especially seeing the dress you are wearing – I think I had one similar! How amazing that you have photo’s of your bedroom decor through the years. I wonder if I do? I probably have – must dig through the photos! I would like to completely change my bedroom furniture. It’s funny how our taste changes over the years! Min xo
Janet says
Hi Min, the funny thing is Miss 16 has bought the EXACT SAME OUTFIT in a different colour/print from an op shop – originally from the same shop – it seems everything old is new again!

I love the fact that you have taken all of those shots of your bedroom! Unfortunately our bedroom seems to be the only room in the house that is forgotten. We still have the same quilt set on it for the past almost 5 years although it was rather expensive and it’s still nice but I’m over the ‘brown’. We are still using the queen sized ‘waveless’ waterbed my husband had before we moved in together which was almost 7 years ago, I want to get an ensemble but he doesn’t like change and can’t part with his water bed!
Janet says
A few people have said that Eva … my bedroom is my haven, it’s funny isn’t it even if nobody else sees it I like it to look nice for ME …
Beck/craftypjmum says
It seems that I change my bedroom decor as much as you do, and right at this very moment I am pouring over paint charts and picking new colours to go with my brand new …….
Yes you guessed it, quilt cover π
Janet says
Ha ha, yes we are quite spoilt to be able to change the look of our bedrooms pretty much whenever we want. First world problem!
