I spy with my little eye … a shirt dress in nearly every fashion store! Have you noticed it too?

It’s a trend I’ve already embraced enthusiastically … and why not? There’s much to love about a shirt dress for summer!

A shirt dress borrows its style cues from … you guessed it … a shirt. So you can expect similar detailing, like a collar of some sort, buttons up the front, and a chest pocket or two.
Perfect for casual wear, the tailored finish gives a summer shirt dress a slightly more dressed up feel.
And the slightly looser fit means that they are cool and comfortable to wear. They make a perfect “everywhere dress”!
Here’s a small selection of what you’ll find on offer …
Blue Shirt Dresses
Blue is a perennial favourite when it comes to men’s business or button up shirts – and it’s the same when it comes to shirt dresses.
This classic chambray look is in store now at Just Jeans (RRP $89.95):
Rivers has a similar version for about half the price (RRP $45, currently on sale for $30):
While Millers has this subtle striped version with embroidery detail, another huge trend to watch over the summer months (RRP $35, currently $21).
For a flirty and feminine style, there’s this soft Tencel dress featuring a broderie anglaise hemline, from Jeans West (RRP $99.99, currently 25% off making it $74.99). Shame about the model’s facial expression. Don’t know about you, but the sultry/half snarling look really doesn’t do it for me!
Summer Neutrals
You’ll find that neutral shades are also popular. This olive shirt dress from Kmart, is a snip at $20:
And if you can’t go past basic black, check out this black linen dress from Rivers (RRP $45 now $30):
Although most shirt dresses seem to be in plain colours, you will find the occasional print. I bought this floral shirt dress from Rivers, RRP $35 (currently on sale for $30). It’s slightly fuller in the skirt, like a trapeze dress:
Or go for a bright bold tropical print, like this sleeveless shirt dress from Millers (RRP $40, now $24):
Do you have – or have plans to add – a summer shirt dress as part of your wardrobe this season?!

I’m liking those dresses! Thanks for the heads up. (And I agree, that model’s expression is not doing it for me either! )
I have two and am already wearing them to death Liz 😉
I bought a long-sleeved one from Adrift a month or two ago. I’m not sure it’s very complimentary but I figured it’d be good for when I’m driving and need long sleeves but don’t want to wear long pants etc as well.
I’m still very much getting used to wearing dresses though. (I haven’t progressed to skirts yet, but you never know!) #teamlovinlife
I rarely wear a skirt myself, unless it’s a plain black one for business type appointments.
I really like a shirt dress but they don’t really like me. Wrap dresses are what like me I have discovered, so I’m loving wrap dresses back at the moment. #TeamLovinLife
Wrap dresses are also fab!
Love the Jeans West version – although the model looks a tad startled, as you say. I’ve never been able to make the button down shirt dress (or indeed, shirt) work for me. I am, however, partial to the t-shirt dress. #teamlovinlife
Oh yes, there’s nothing like a comfy t-shirt dress 🙂
Yes I’m a big fan of the shirt dress. I have a couple that I like to wear. I’m crushing on that chambray one from Just Jeans. I might have to try it on! #TeamLovinLife
It’s a beauty isn’t it!
Last summer I got a dark blue one with short sleeves from Country Road. I’d love to have more but find it difficult to get ones without pockets on the bust.
I know what you mean, sometimes pockets are just too much.
I love shirt dresses but can’t get away with them. Whenever I put one on it just doesn’t look right *sigh*. If I could get away with them, I’d buy the one with the embroidery.
It’s pretty isn’t it!
I love the shirt dress – I’ll be looking for one with sleeves seeing as it’s getting chilly here in England! x #Lovin’LifeLinky
Oh yes, they are great for winter too, layered over a long sleeved t, with tights or leggings and boots.
Loving the Jeans West version, but I tried it on instore and it wasn’t the right shape for me (looked like a maternity smock on me!). #TeamLovinLife
Yes, that can happen sometimes!!!
I got that exact same colour shirtdress from Rivers also. Love it.
