French Onion Steak – easy as 1 2 3!

Janet Camilleri · 19/02/2014 ·

This recipe for French Onion Steak is so easy, it’s not even a recipe!

Here it is in pictures:

French Onion Soup Mix on Steak
1. Sprinkle a packet of French Onion Soup mix on 1kg of rump steak
Alfoil on French Onion Steak
2. Seal baking dish with aluminium foil and bake for 1 hour at 180 degrees

Although it takes an hour to cook, at least you are free to do other things while it is in the oven so I think of French Onion Steak as one of my “quick and easy” dinners.

If you find it a bit salty (which it can be, depending on the brand you use), just use half of the French Onion soup packet.

Have you ever made French Onion Steak? Think you’ll give it a try?

I’ll give it a go do u need to take it out of the oven to turn it? & how do you stop it burning in the dish, put some oil or butter in? Is it better top or bottom shelf in a gas oven?

    Cheers

No need to turn it, once it’s in the oven it just stays there for an hour. I sprayed my pan first and put it in the middle shelf 🙂

Thanks for this! I’m always looking for simple ways to jazz up food. I reckon I’ll give this a go. What brand soup mix would you recommend?

Kaz I think home brand is better for this recipe, it’s not quite as strong. But that’s just my opinion!!!

Looks and sounds yummy and so easy 🙂 Another tip would be, if you don’t like the salty taste of french onion soup, you could try the New Zealand Maggi Onion Soup, much nicer and a smoother taste. Will definitely be trying this recipe out, thanks. 🙂

How easy – we do something similar, mix the French onion soup with a little butter and tomato sauce and bake sealed either like you have or in individual packets. yum! Particularly good for tough steak!

Thanks that is such a cool recipe, you clever thing! Next time I have some rump, I’m going to try that. I put french onion soup mix with cream for a potato bake, thats yummy too 🙂

What did we do before french onion soup mix was invented?!

Looks good, hubby might disagree that I destroyed a perfectly good steak but perhaps I can use a cheaper cut and VOILA! I used this dip and add sour cream to get a delish dip!!

I made this many, many years ago-almost back in the Dark Ages!and it was delicious, the children were not as keen,so I used Mushroom soup instead of French onion and that worked really well.I couldn’t remember if I had added a little water to the dry soup mix or not.So apparently not,I will give it a go really soon, haven’t had it for ages.Thanks.
