Going for a Drive

Janet Camilleri · 13/07/2017 ·

When was the last time you picked up the car keys, and headed out the door with no particular destination in mind?

going for a drive

Hubster and I were reminiscing about that old family tradition, of going for a drive on the weekend. You know, where everybody piles into the car, and off you go. No maps, no rush. It’s not about getting somewhere in particular, rather, it’s just seeing where the road takes you and what you might discover along the way.

I don’t know about you, but our weekends tend to get so busy – and after hubster has spent two hours each workday commuting to and from work – that we rarely seem to take the time to go for a drive.

And yet … the odd time that we do, we find it it so worthwhile! For example:

    • We have some great chats while driving along. There is just something about the cocoon atmosphere of the car, that allows you to reveal your deepest thoughts and discuss them at leisure, without any interruption.
    • The change of scenery, and getting away from it all, really does help to blow the cobwebs out of your brain (although personally, I prefer going for rides on hubster’s motorbike than going for a drive, as I tend to fall asleep if in the car for any length of time – thanks a lot sleep apnea!).
    • You get to know your local area better.
    • You never know what treasures you might stumble upon – an unexpected view, a quaint cafe, a new picnic spot.

  • Personally, I think the hubster looks rather spunky when he is driving – it shows off his muscly legs and arms – or is that TMI?!

Perhaps I should add it to my list of things that make me happy?!

I must admit that although going for a drive was a regular weekend activity when I was a kid, I didn’t enjoy it so much back then. This might have been because it was an activity that was forced upon us, rather than one we chose. To me, it was “boring” so I would always take a book to read in the car – I’m surprised now that it didn’t make me travel sick!

Do you remember going for a drive when you were a kid? When was the last you went for a Sunday drive?!

As a kid I used to hate it when Mum and Dad said “come on kids – we’re going for a drive”. Oh nooooo!! LOL As an adult when we used to go for a drive it was usually to look at real estate or we had a planned destination – a day trip of some sort. These days our weekends are a little too structured and full! I do wish there was room for more spontaneity!! #TeamLovinLife

When I was a kid our Sunday drive was usually to church but that was something to look forward to as it meant catching up with friends and a visit to the shop afterwards for ice creams 🙂
Like you we have great conversations in the car and I also find that when I am on a longish drive on my own it is great thinking time.
I hope you get that sleep apnea sorted out.

We often do little trips around our area, go down random streets or find a new park etc. It’s amazing what might be a few streets from you but you’ve never looked because it just looks like another street.

Exactly! Which is why I’d like to do it more often 🙂

Ha, that’s something we NEVER did when I was growing up. My dad was very much a type A person so we’d only get in the car or go somewhere IF we were going somewhere. Even now it’s not something I do although I occasionally drive around aimlessly killing time! #teamlovinlife

I used to dislike drives when I was little as I got car sick. But latterly there’s nothing Dave and I like doing more – just getting in the car and going somewhere – it’s so relieving, time to think and time to chat without distraction 🙂

Question. What does TMI mean? When I was a kid we frequently went on Sunday drives. I almost always got car sick and I remember my Dad telling me to wind the window down for some fresh air. Occasionally we do go driving on the weekends to do a hike or go for lunch somewhere a bit different. 🙂 #TeamLovinLife

I hated family drives when I was a kid – my dad wrote a motoring column in the newspaper and we often took long drives in whatever car he was testing – I used to get carsick and it was a miserable time all round. Now it’s different – better car, air-con. a lovely husband, and if the kids come it’s because they want to – ahh Midlife is so good!

My sister and I took the kids for a ‘sunday’ drive on Tuesday! thanks to school holidays. We had a good day visiting the beach, chips for lunch and on to another town to go opshopping. Great way to get rid of the cobwebs!

And nothing better than a Sunday drive – on a non-Sunday!

When the kids were smaller, they would fall asleep and we could actually have an uninterrupted conversation 😉

I used to hate the Sunday drive as a kid – so booooooring. These days I like nothing better than one. Just heading out & exploring. I would never have known there was such a thing as knit fest if we didn’t go for a drive last Sunday – & my life would be so much poorer for it! #TeamLovinLife

Knitfest – sounds intriguing – you will have to blog about it!

I haven’t done that for ages. I used to love doing that. We need to add that back onto our things to do. Although we are so busy we can hardly fit in the things on our list, let alone the things that have no list at all …

As a young teenager, all our Sunday afternoon drives seemed to be “looking at the trees” & this was between two attendances at Church!! Love drives these days. Attended grandson’s U10 footy match in the ccccccold at 8am this morning, then drove to 50ks from Ballarat to Beaufort for brunch. Why not? Have fun everyone.

It’s such a feeling of freedom when you don’t have to be anywhere in particular, isn’t it Lorraine!
