When was the last time you picked up the car keys, and headed out the door with no particular destination in mind?
Hubster and I were reminiscing about that old family tradition, of going for a drive on the weekend. You know, where everybody piles into the car, and off you go. No maps, no rush. It’s not about getting somewhere in particular, rather, it’s just seeing where the road takes you and what you might discover along the way.
I don’t know about you, but our weekends tend to get so busy – and after hubster has spent two hours each workday commuting to and from work – that we rarely seem to take the time to go for a drive.
And yet … the odd time that we do, we find it it so worthwhile! For example:
-
- We have some great chats while driving along. There is just something about the cocoon atmosphere of the car, that allows you to reveal your deepest thoughts and discuss them at leisure, without any interruption.
- The change of scenery, and getting away from it all, really does help to blow the cobwebs out of your brain (although personally, I prefer going for rides on hubster’s motorbike than going for a drive, as I tend to fall asleep if in the car for any length of time – thanks a lot sleep apnea!).
- You get to know your local area better.
- You never know what treasures you might stumble upon – an unexpected view, a quaint cafe, a new picnic spot.
- Personally, I think the hubster looks rather spunky when he is driving – it shows off his muscly legs and arms – or is that TMI?!
Perhaps I should add it to my list of things that make me happy?!
I must admit that although going for a drive was a regular weekend activity when I was a kid, I didn’t enjoy it so much back then. This might have been because it was an activity that was forced upon us, rather than one we chose. To me, it was “boring” so I would always take a book to read in the car – I’m surprised now that it didn’t make me travel sick!
Do you remember going for a drive when you were a kid? When was the last you went for a Sunday drive?!
