Going Retro in Redlands: Bayside Antiques and Collectables Centre

Janet Camilleri · 08/11/2013 ·

Got a hankering to go retro in Redlands? I know just the place …  you might have seen it on the Great South East on Channel 7 last weekend, which featured Bloomfield Street, in Cleveland.

One of the points of interest was the Bayside Antiques and Collectables Centre, which the hubster and I just happened to visit for the first time recently – despite passing the shopfront on an almost daily basis for several years! For shame …

We had no idea just how much was inside …

retro fashion

The “diner girl” out the front is a familiar sight to most Redland locals …

Amazing Antiques of all Kinds

Inside is a regular treasure trove! I was fascinated by the retro clothing, toys and household items while the hubster was engrossed in the old tools, military memorabilia and other junk interesting stuff.

It’s a very weird feeling when you see toys and other items from your own childhood in an ANTIQUES store ;-). For example, the Enid Blyton books below; the rocking chair; and the View Master – all things I once played with!

childhood memories

Below are more of the objects that brought childhood memories flooding back – old Women’s Weekly magazines, the electric jug, the school issue exercise book, the crystal set from my Grandma’s dressing table, her old Singer treadle sewing machine, and a high chair just like I used to sit in, 45 years ago!

remember these

Going Retro in Redlands – 60’s memorabilia

When I was in my teens, there must have been a resurgence of interest in all things oriental. I had a jewellery box very similar to the one below, and a couple of these Japanese style dolls. And who could forget this cheeky little album?!

teenage memories

There was so much to look at. Thankfully they provide a comfy cafe space with complimentary tea and coffee so we could rest our weary feet.

Next time you’re in town, make sure you check out the best place to go retro in Redlands!

NB This is not a sponsored post, we just fell in love with the Bayside Antiques and Collectables Centre. You can like them on Facebook, here!

Would you believe I have never been to any kind of antique shop. I don’t even know of darwin has one.
I remember flaying with a view finder; they were awesome! Can’t believe that’s considered an antique!

Although I’m an op-shopper from way back, I’d never been “antiquing” before. We actually ended up buying a frothy tulle petticoat to go under Miss Almost 17’s formal dress while we were there!

Thanks for stopping by Aroha and testing out my new comments plugin! Can’t help thinking the high chair looks very hard and uncomfortable compared to the models available nowadays 😉

OMG – that is my past right there in your post! I have that Ripper album STILL. I sat in a high chair like that. I have that crystal dressing table set (someone gave it to me) though it’s not in use. I had that rocking horse. I read and have some of those Enid Blyton books and I had and played with that View Master!! They are antiques already? Really?! O.M.G … scuse me while I shuffle off to my rocking chair LOL

I know Min, it’s scary isn’t it! Sadly I don’t have hardly any momentoes from my childhood due to being estranged from my Mum before she died, but this is the next best thing 😉

Who would have thought the things or your childhood or teenage years would be seen as antiques now? And I always get surprised by how much people pay to acquire those everyday items of old. I need to make a day trip or two out your way to check it out and explore the bayside. 🙂

I’m biased Bec, but it’s a lovely neck of the woods!

I’d get lost in a shop like this. So many treasures. I still have my Wishing Chair book.

How awesome, I went op shopping recently and I really got addicted, I know it’s different to Antiques but lots of older people give away things they have no idea are valuable to people my age 🙂 x

I love it when memories come flooding back and it sounds like you hit a goldmine with this shop! Wallowing in nostalgia is one of my favourite hobbies! Funny how things from childhood get that glow about them!

Wow, I love it what a treasure trove indeed! Hope you enjoyed the trip down memory lane. Did you buy anything?

I saw a tulle bridal petticoat which I thought would be perfect for Miss Almost 17 to wear under her formal dress, so we went back and she tried it on – and we bought it!

I have never been into antiques shops etc however I quite like watching those “pickers” Tv shows when they’re on. Intriguing …
