How I Look This Good at 50!

Janet Camilleri · 21/06/2017 ·

Although the title of this post sounds completely vain and self-serving, I’m actually just parroting the headline from a magazine I read last week:

how i look this good at 50 magazine cover

Seems Nicole Kidman is also celebrating her Festival of 50 this year, and supposedly sharing her biggest beauty secret.

I don’t doubt Nic looks good, but I suspect there is no money or effort spared to make sure she does – and not just the slathering on of sun screen which she claims is her own secret weapon.

In real life, her beauty list probably includes all of the following (if not more!):

  1. Botox / cosmetic injectables;
  2. Hair dye;
  3. A professional brow artist;
  4. Personal makeup artist;
  5. A personal trainer;
  6. Lip fillers;
  7. Cheek fillers;
  8. Regular facials;
  9. A personal chef;
  10. And dietitian;
  11. Massage therapist;
  12. Expensive face creams;
  13. Porcelain veneers on her teeth;
  14. Cosmetic surgery;
  15. Personal hair stylist;
  16. Weekly manicures, and
  17. Pedicures;
  18. A stylist to put her “look” together for important events;
  19. Designer gowns and outfits, that are …
  20. Custom tailored to her figure;
  21. Shapewear;
  22. Eyelash extensions;
  23. A limitless budget;
  24. The best photographers; and
  25. Photoshop.

Whew, must be a fulltime job keeping up with all that.

Now, do you wanna know how *I* look this good at 50?!

I mostly credit my looks to:

  1. My smile;
  2. Cheerful personality;
  3. A little makeup;
  4. A good haircut and some blonde foils;
  5. Wearing colours and styles, that I know suit me;
  6. And finally, I try to look after myself, eating well, exercising, good dental hygiene – that sort of thing.

I know who I’d rather be, and it ain’t Nicole!

Beauty is

How do you look as good as you do (your age is irrelevant!)?!

    I sometimes look at pictures of myself – or just at myself in the mirror – and think I look middle-aged and dowdy. But I’m getting better at being more accepting of others who are ageing well. I follow a lot of middle aged bloggers and instagrammers now and find myself not thinking of their age at all.

    I think a smile and happy disposition makes a difference to people’s faces. I know some people can’t held their ‘bitchy resting face’ but the occasional smile and twinkling / friendly eyes help!

      I think a smile and twinkly eyes are the not-so-secret beauty secret we should all adopt! PS I’m loving your blond hair, it really suits you.

    I think I’m doing okay for 55 – my secret would be 1) having led a pretty uneventful life – no drugs, wild partying, etc to have prematurely aged me (darn) 2) a bit of colour in my hair and on my face (when I go out), a smile and a laugh – they are the biggest secrets. Love that you shared yours – and although Keith Urban is cute, I wouldn’t want to be Nicole in a million years.

      Yes I should have added that – a bit of make up “sometimes” (I certainly don’t wear it everyday). And like you I’ve never really smoked, drank, done drugs etc.

    Oh you cynic you 😉
    I agree a smile makes a huge difference and then I can tell myself my wrinkles are just laughter lines 🙂

      LOL … I remember when Nic won the Dolly covergirl contest back when we are about 14, and I’ve gotta be honest, I thought she was pretty ugly with that frizzy red hair! She doesn’t look anything like her younger self, these days.

    Haha, I love this post! I often think about all the advantages the rich and famous have over the rest of us. But you’re right, true beauty really does shine from within.

    I certainly don’t have the time or inclination for all that. But obviously it works for her. I think your list is much more achievable. Thanks for the fun post, and for stopping by my blog last week. Have a great week ahead.
