How to Wear a Long Vest

Janet Camilleri · 05/06/2017 ·

I have found that a long vest (or sleeveless cardigan as I’ve also heard them called), is a fantastic addition to my winter wardrobe.

This is for a few reasons:

  • Our winters are relatively mild here in Brisbane so I don’t need the extra warmth of jumpers much.
  • I work from home so rarely have to brave the chill outside first thing in the morning.
  • And, since I’ve hit middle age, I tend to overheat easily so even on the coldest days, I need to wear layers that can be added or removed regularly!

Luckily, there are plenty of long sleeveless vests to choose from, that won’t break the bank (there are some great sales on at the moment too).

1. Oatmeal waterfall rib cardi at Katies, was $59.95 now $27.97
2. Waterfall rib cardi in black at Katies, was $59.95 now $27.97
3. Knitted fringe vest from Crossroadsicon, was $29.95 now $20

If you are unsure of how to wear a long sleeveless vest, you can try it out by popping it over whatever you happen to be wearing, after you get dressed in the morning.

I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how much ooomph it adds to the most basic of outfits!

Long Sleeveless Vest over Black

If you wear a lot of black in the cooler months (and who doesn’t?!), you have the basics nailed already.

Here I’m showing you how it’s done, with a long grey sleeveless vest* which is already on regular rotation in my wardrobe.

Long Sleeveless Vest over Jeans

Mostly, these long vests are available in neutrals such as black, grey, sand and oatmeal, which makes them extremely versatile.

1. Suedette Long Line Vest from Crossroads, was $54.95 now $20
2. Two tone gilet in black (pictured) or silver marle, from Sussan, $99.95
3. Millers sleeveless metallic stripe cardigan, was $40 now $25

Pop one over jeans and a t-shirt – striped, patterned or plain, long sleeves or short – and you have instant style.

Long Sleeveless Vest over a Dress

Or, try a long sleeveless vest over a dress, like I’m doing here:

Shaggy Long Sleeveless Vest

Asos festival shaggy waistcoat, $56

Although I can’t see the hubster wearing anything like this, any time soon, personally, I am loving this shaggy number from ASOS. Wonder how it would look on ME?!

Have you embraced a long sleeveless vest as part of your look this winter?!

Thanks for the options Janet. I love my purple long sleeveless vest which I mainly wear to add colour when I’m dressed head to toe in black.
