I Must Confess: I’ve Never Been Drunk

Janet Camilleri · 31/03/2014 ·

Although I like a drink every now and then, I've never been drunk
It’s not as if I never drink alcohol; but,
I’ve never been drunk in all my 47 years!

After reading another blogger’s post about her drunken tipsy shenanigans recently, I realised something about myself that others might find rather unusual.

I Must Confess: I’ve never been drunk.

It’s not that I don’t drink alcohol at all. It’s just I’ve never been drunk – and have never experienced a hangover. Seriously.

I’ve never really liked the taste of most alcoholic drinks, so that has definitely been a factor. Beer, spirits, champagne – DIS-GUST-ING. How can anybody drink that stuff?! I have a sweet tooth so even wine didn’t really take my fancy, until Moscato came along ;-).

In my early teenage years, I had an alcoholic and violent stepfather, so this might have something to do with it perhaps.

Or the fact that I am a bit of a control freak, and don’t like the thought of not being in control of my faculties.

As it turns out, I am actually allergic to some of the preservatives/chemicals commonly found in alcoholic beverages. I learned the hard way that just a glass of some wines will give me a raging case of hay fever. It’s hard to enjoy a party or have a good time when your eyes are streaming and you can’t stop sneezing. In fact, the Christmas just gone I had half a glass of cider at lunch with the outlaws … and then wondered why I felt so miserable and snotty for the rest of the day!

But don’t feel sorry for me! I really don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything.

I’ve never really seen the point of drinking to excess. Because getting that drunk would mean vomiting and I loathe vomiting – why would I do something guaranteed to end with me hugging the toilet bowl?!

I *do* know what it’s like to get a bit giggly and light-headed (when you drink so infrequently, it only takes a sip or two!). Although come to think of it, that’s pretty much my normal personality 😉 .

If you have a history (or even a present!) filled with drunken escapades, please don’t think I’m judging you in any way! I might not have ever been drunk, but I’m sure there are plenty of things I’ve done that haven’t been the wisest choices either …

What’s your attitude to drinking? Are there any other “never been drunks” out there?!

I’ve only ever been drunk once in my early 20’s. Or at least tipsy enough to do a star fish impersonation on the floor of the public toilets in a caravan park. Ew. I had a headache the next morning and felt a bit seedy. I’ve never been drunk to the point of vomiting or forgetting what happened, though. Like you, I really don’t like that out of control feeling so I don’t think I’m missing much.

And here was me thinking that drinking to excess would be a totally bogan thing to do! 😉

I’m not really sure where the line between tipsy and drunk is, to be honest. I know I’ve been tipsy plenty of times. I would say I’ve only been truly drunk once or twice.
I don’t think I’ve ever had a hangover. One day I had a minor migraine after drinking the night before, but I’d been having a few of them around that time so I don’t know if it was related or not. Maybe it just aggravated whatever was wrong with me, so it was half and half.
Generally speaking, I have a pretty natural stopping point for drinking. I’ve certainly never vomited from drinking – I think the hatred of vomiting stops me from drinking on a subconscious level maybe!?
I’ve actually wondered if I have a minor allergy to some alcohol – I’ve noticed I sneeze a bit after some wine. It’s very minor & doesn’t happen every time, but it’s enough that I pay attention to see if there is a pattern.

It could be an allergy Vanessa. I bought a tiny bottle of “Pure Wine” last time we went to the bottle-o, it looks like eye drops. A couple of drops of it is supposed to neutralise the chemicals in the wine or something – I’m going to use it when I have a drink in future to see if that helps ward off the allergy symptoms.

As a Kiwi who went to university, the drinking culture is massive over there, so yes I’ve been drunk many a time, had some wicked hangovers but as I’ve had kids and matured (NOT) they are far and few in between. There are too many chemicals/preservatives in wine, the ones that make people get blocked up and sneeze etc, and they really make me feel horrible, so I try not to over consume wine/bubbly. But I do enjoy a vodka, lemon, soda with lots of ice!

I’ve never tried a vodka lemon and soda – will have to try it next time I’m out – you could be corrupting me! 😉

I’m the same. I rarely drink alcohol because it makes me too tired and like you I prefer the sweeter wines. Give me a lemon lime and bitters any day.

Yes! I’m a lemon lime and bitters girl too 🙂

I hope I wasn’t the sozzled blogger Janet! What goes on the blog stays on the blog! Just joking. Seriously I love a drink or three but I don’t touch anything except wine or champagne because I get asthma from other alcohol. How weird is that? I do occasionally get a bit of a headache but I’ve never drunk so much as to throw up. Not since I was in my very early twenties anyway 😉

Relax, it wasn’t you Pinky … though it wouldn’t matter if it was … still loves ya anyways!

I have to say, I’m the same. I very rarely drink because I’m usually the designated driver to get everyone home!

I used to drink quite a bit in my university/single days but since having the kids I usually have the occasionally wine or champers or a glass of beer. Anymore than two glasses now tipsy…my hubby works away a lot so I don’t like to drink alcohol by myself in case there is an emergency with the kids and I would need to function like a grown up. I don’t think you are missing much in the alcohol dept either- you can still have fun without the wine.

oh there have been many a day where I have woken up wishing I wasn’t drunk the night before and swearing to never do it again!!! I am not a constant or regular drinker, but when I do I tend to do a good job of it… haha

I’ve never been a huge drinker Janet. I have been drunk a couple of times but not for many years now. Like you I like to be in control – plus I could never have a hangover with three kids to look after!

I’ve rarely been drunk ,maybe tipsy a few times – for the fact I detest vomiting and wasting money on alcohol. I don’t judge anyone either – we have vices.

I’m a drunkard. I always find it funny when people say they can’t drink sweet stuff like wine because it always tastes bitter to me, regardless of how sweet the reviews and labels say lol. The only spirit I can drink is vodka and I have discovered if I drink the decent stuff then I don’t get a hangover the next day.
I think people who don’t drink are more common now, or at least it’s not as sneered at as it used to be.

I love a drink or three! My weapon of choice is a nice dry white wine and I drink almost everyday. However I mix my wine with soda water and I limit myself to two glasses a day (so it’s really only one glass). I also like the occasional cocktail and love nothing more that sharing a few drinkies with my girlfriends and getting a bit tipsy and laughing our heads off. I feel it helps me to relax and unwind. However excessive drinking, I’m not into and have bought my kids up to feel the same way.

Janet! Guess what? I have never ever been drunk in my life too! Wine make me sleep. And, cocktails have the same effect on me than you, I become giggly and talk a lot… But, then again I talk a lot all the time! And, like you, I don’t think I’m missing out on anything!

I’m actually allergic to the stuff thanks to my dodgy pancreas. I can remember the last time I had a drink, a nip of Baileys and ended up on a drip for two weeks. Never again.

I’m pretty sure I had far too many drunken moments as a teen. Not keen to relive those days. 🙂

I’ve never been either, though I do enjoy sipping a glass of wine for leisure. Having seen some friends who have taken it a step too far, I don’t think I’d like to see myself in that state… red-faced, vomiting, spewing nonsense. I don’t think I mind missing out on that!
